The Source

Full time job and description of your job: I have six half-time jobs including teaching at Lincoln Land, playing piano on the Spirit of Peoria riverboat, writing for The Consortium Publishing Company, writing weekly articles for 14 Midwest newspapers as Freida Marie Crump, running youth camps, directing community theatre, and being a male model. I’m only lying about the last one.  How you started writing (in general and for the source): Triopia hired me, I lied and said I could direct plays, didn’t know where to find them so I lied again and said I could write plays. I fooled them for 34 years. Started writing for the Source when the editor bought me a horseshoe sandwich The Brickhouse.  What do you enjoy writing about?: What I see/hear/smell/feel/live.  What inspires you?: Deadlines.  Do you generally have everything written and turned in on the deadline, before, or do you procrastinate?: I’ve not missed a deadline in the 30 years I’ve been writing. I was raised on a farm where if you miss a deadline the cow dies.  Talk a bit about your family: Brother Keith who dabbles in banking, sister-in-law Nancy runs ISD, two nephews who have jobs I don’t understand and a father…90 years old and the youngest of the bunch.  Hobbies/Interests: People. Okay, travel, music, theatre, etc., but without people, they’re not very interesting.  Favorites Book: The Ring Trilogy, Blue Highways, Travels with Charley. Movie: This question isn’t politically correct. It should include “plays.” TV Show: Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations Food: Nobody could fry chicken like my grandma. ..with milk gravy.. with iced tea. Type of music and artist: Strangely, I don’t listen to much music. Vacation spot: I’ve been lots of places but still favor Arenzville on a fall evening when the streets are filled with dogs, joggers, walkers, talkers, and the smell of Burgoo.  Greatest fear: If it crawls, don’t let it near me.  Most embarrassing moment: The ten-year-old me once went into the kitchen to get a towel while wearing only my underwear. I wish I’d known that the cute neighbor girl was sitting there talking to mom.  Can you think of something that no one would know about you?: I seem to be in charge of a great many things but I’d rather follow.  What is your favorite thing about The Source?: The highly attractive staff.
