Ellie and God, PAC III, Staff Meeting
Cc: Wes, Brit, Jasper ELLIE: Hi God.
GOD: Hello Ellie.
ELLIE: I didn’t expect this.
GOD: What?
ELLIE: To be the one up here talking to you.
GOD: I’m tricky.
ELLIE: I know. (a long beat, then) I’m nervous.
GOD: Good.
ELLIE: It is?
GOD: That means you need me.
ELLIE: You’re not kidding.
GOD: I’m really not, Ellie. Whenever you’re comfortable, you sort of take over….you know what I mean?
ELLIE: You mean…you make me nervous on purpose?
GOD: No…no, I’d never do that. But I don’t always take the nerves away. . . I want you to depend on me. And when you do that, everything you do comes out better. So….how’re you doing now?
ELLIE: (a long beat, then) I’m still nervous.
GOD: Good. Do you trust me?
ELLIE: Sure.
GOD: Then trust me in this. Just trust me, Ellie. I’ve created the perfect . . . playground out here to step out of your area of comfort.
ELLIE: And I’ve got the same problem about tomorrow. I see some of the counselors….they meet kids so easy. Kids even run to them.
GOD: What about you?
ELLIE: I run to them, too, but …..well…sometimes I hope somebody else gets there first.
GOD: (laughs) I thought you were the cross-country star.
ELLIE: Me too.
GOD: Ellie…it’s almost funny. We spend the whole weekend urging kids to step out of their comfort zone, then when it comes time for us to try something different…well….
ELLIE: So what do I . . . ?
GOD: Nothing. Nothing at all, Ellie. Just trust me. I can never lift you to the next step if you keep hanging on to the ladder.
ELLIE: (a long beat, then) Thanks, Lord.
WES: Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.
JASPER: Think of what you were when I called you. Not many of you were wise by human standards.
BRITTANY: Not by might, nor by power, but my Spirit, says the Lord.
GOD: So…are you ready for this?
ELLIE: (a beat, then) No.
GOD: Perfect. I am. Now… let me prepare you.
(You exit.)
