I, 2 Travis & God
2008
TRAVIS: (entering) Hey God! Did you see that_____________ ? (name a performance that just happened)
GOD: (laughs) Uh..yeah. You think I stepped out of the building or something?
TRAVIS: Oh..yeah. Boy, I wish I could ________ like that. So…I mean…how come you gave her/him that ability to __________ like that but not me?
GOD: There’s a lot of things you can do, Travis.
TRAVIS: Yeah, I know..but I’ve always wanted to be able to _____ like that. How do you decide who gets to be good at what?
GOD: Stand on one leg.
TRAVIS: Do what?
GOD: Stand on one leg for me a minute.
TRAVIS: Uh…well..okay. (he balances on one leg)
GOD: Do what I tell you, Travis.
TRAVIS: I am! I’m standing on one leg!
GOD: But you’re looking, too. I didn’t tell you to look at anything.
TRAVIS: Close my eyes?
GOD: Are you gonna play this game or not?
TRAVIS: Okay! Okay! I’ll close my eyes! (he does)
GOD: Wait a minute. I didn’t tell you to breathe.
TRAVIS: I gotta quit breathing?
GOD: Simon says quit breathing. (Travis takes a breath and holds it) Good..good…I’ll be back in an hour to check on you.
TRAVIS: (dropping all his poses) An hour! Lord, I can’t stand on one leg, close my eyes and hold my breath for an hour!
GOD: (sighs) Oh geesh..such a wimp.
TRAVIS: What?!
GOD: Kidding. Look, what if I took that leg away from you?
TRAVIS: Well…I guess I’d hop a lot…and fall over.
GOD: And took away your eyes…
TRAVIS: I’d…I’d run into things.
GOD: And your breath?
TRAVIS: That’d be a bad one. I guess I’d probably die.
GOD: Every part of you…every piece of you has a job, doesn’t it?
TRAVIS: (stops and looks at the various parts of his body for a moment, then) Yeah… I guess I need all of me.
GOD: ___________’s got a great voice. __________ is a wonderful dancer. _______ is about the craziest improv actor I’ve ever seen. So what if I made everybody at camp into one person with all these talents?
TRAVIS: I guess we’d have a pretty small audience.
GOD: Bingo.
TRAVIS: Bingo?
GOD: The Hebrew word for “Well ‘duh.’, Bubba.” But the greatest talents out there in the audience..the very best ones…are the ones you can’t even see. I’ll give you a tour. Pick somebody out…Just pick out anybody.
TRAVIS: (moves to the audience, points to someone and says their name) ________?
GOD: She/He’s got the talent for listening to people when they have a problem. Not many people can do that.
TRAVIS: (picks out another and says their name) _______________?
GOD: Ah..yeah..one of my best encouragers. He/she pumps people up…she makes them feel good about themselves.
TRAVIS: Cool. (goes to a third person) How about____________?
GOD: Yeah..my most precious gift of all… __________ knows how to love people. In fact, _____ loves them even when they do things he/she doesn’t like. She/he loves them no matter what anybody else thinks.
TRAVIS: (a long beat as he crosses back to the front) That’s pretty cool. I guess it’s not all that important whether I can ________ like ___________.
GOD: It’s fun. But it’s not a biggie like these others. Do…you wanna do me some good… or do you just want the applause?
TRAVIS: (thinks a short moment, then points to God and says..) Bingo. (exits)
