John and God, PAC III, 3

JOHN: Last night of PAC, Lord. My favorite.

GOD: Mine too.

JOHN: We can come to the altar. …I really like that.

GOD: I’ll be there waiting for you.

JOHN: But it’s funny…I don’t mean “funny” funny..but you know…confusing sometimes.

GOD: Really?

JOHN: I used to get all mixed up when people talked about being saved and salvation and giving my heart to You. I was never quite sure…

GOD: (interrupting) When did you meet ________?

JOHN: Huh?

GOD: ___________. When did you meet __________?

JOHN: Uh…I was talking about coming to the altar tonight and…

GOD: So am I. When did you meet ___________? ………….Is this too tough a question?

JOHN: No. No…it was right here at PAC camp, but I wasn’t talking about ______, I was wondering.

GOD: And you became friends?

JOHN: Yeah…we’ve been friends ever since.

GOD: Because….. ?

JOHN: Well… I liked her. She was nice to me. I could trust her.

GOD: You believed what she said….

JOHN: Still do.

GOD: What else?

JOHN: Well…she gave me a hug…and friendship…

GOD: She gave you something.

JOHN: Yeah. (a beat, then) I don’t see where this is going.

GOD: Humor me, okay? So your friendship……?

JOHN: That was just the beginning. We’re really tight now.

GOD: Your friendship kept growing?

JOHN: Yeah….seems like we get closer all the time.

GOD: That’s what the altar’s for tonight.

JOHN: (the person’s name) ___________?

GOD: No. Me. The start of a friendship…or maybe getting close again. Like _______. Do believe me when I say I sent my son to die for your sin?

JOHN: Yeah.

GOD: Are you sorry when you make me sad by sinning?

JOHN: Sure.

GOD: Would you like to keep up our friendship forever? Are you willing to tell me that.

JOHN: I’ll tell you right now.

GOD: Then that’s what the altar’s for, John. Friendship..yours and mine. Like a best friend, you believe what I’ve done for you, you’re sorry for hurting me, and you want to stay friends forever.

JOHN: (a beat, then) That’s…..that’s so simple.

GOD: (a beat) And big.

JOHN: Yeah. Really big.

GOD: So…will I see you down here tonight?

JOHN: You kidding? I wouldn’t miss it.

GOD: And I never miss it. And remember….tonight is just a start, okay?

JOHN: Just a start.

GOD: It gets even better.

JOHN: (a beat, then) I can’t wait.

GOD: (a beat, then) Then don’t. (John stands a minute, smiles, and exits)
