John and God, PAC IV, 2
JOHN: Hey Lord?
GOD: Hi John.
JOHN: Every time I come to camp…
GOD: Yeah…
JOHN: I keep thinking about other people…people who aren’t here. Like…Like Isaac.
GOD: Cool kid.
JOHN: He’s the greatest little cousin in the world, Lord. He’s down Downs’ Syndrome and his family was nervous about letting him come to camp.
GOD: I know.
JOHN: But he’s so funny, God. And he loves me so much!
GOD: I’ve seen his face when you walk into the room. You’re his hero, John.
JOHN: I think he’d love this place…but he isn’t here. And then I was talking to a kid down in Drama and he said he was worried about his dad who didn’t go to church.
GOD: I heard him.
JOHN: It’s just that when you get out here and you hear about what it’s like to live a life for Christ…well…you want everybody to have it…and you start worrying about the people you love…
GOD: I know.
JOHN: So…I mean…what do I do? How do we get the people we love… our family…our friends back home…how do we get them to….
GOD: The seam in that carpet is coming apart.
JOHN: (a beat, then) Huh?
GOD: Look at it. All that dancing…the seams are starting to split.
JOHN: (look at the carpet seams, then) Uh…okay.
GOD: Better fix it.
JOHN: I don’t know how to fix a carpet.
GOD: Roger Davis does. And that far left light is starting to sag. Better adjust it.
JOHN: Mr. West knows how to adjust the lights.
GOD: I know. I taught him. And the bass guitar …whoa…needs tuning.
JOHN: But Kyle knows how to…..
GOD: I know. So…are you saying it’s not always your job to do everything?
JOHN: (a beat, then) No. I guess not. I just need to tell them that…
GOD: You just need to tell them.
JOHN: (a beat, then) So….my friends….my family….Isaac..
GOD: You have one job, John. Talk to me. Pray about your friends…pray about your family… I know you’ll always pray for Isaac. Then maybe the best person to reach them might be someone else.
JOHN: I never thought about that.
GOD: Who was the first person that went to the altar with you…back when you were a young camper?
JOHN: I guess it was….I guess it was (name them) ___________.
GOD: But it was your Grandma Judy who’d prayed for you…your Grandpa Wayne …Your mother Sally prayed…Your sister Wendy …. Someone had talked to me about you…then I chose someone to send. (a beat) Is this making sense?
JOHN: Yeah…yeah. My job is to pray…then I may be the person who’ll go to them…or I may not.
GOD: You got it.
JOHN: And I can do all that…just with prayer. That’s cool.
GOD: Better than a magic wand. (John exits)
