LAURA: Well…here we are, Lord. Seems like we just get to PAC and the end is coming up.
GOD: It’s been good.
LAURA: Yeah. It’s been very good. (a long beat)
GOD: Something wrong?
LAURA: (a beat, then) How do I keep it, Lord? This feeling…this joy…how do stay close to you?
GOD: Sometimes you won’t.
LAURA: You know that already?
GOD: I’ve been around awhile. I’ve got a good friend sitting out there tonight…He’s pumped. He’s ready to serve me.. but in a couple of days he may drift away a bit…
LAURA: I know the feeling.
GOD: Another friend of mine… She’s given her life to me this weekend but by next weekend there’ll be this …this distance between us…not big, but real.
LAURA: (a long beat, then) Those stories, Lord…those people. They’re familiar. Too familiar. How do I…how do we fill that gap…that…that space between who we are and who we want to be?
GOD: It’s already been filled.
LAURA: Really?
GOD: There’s this word, Laura. It’s a word you’ve heard all your life and you’ve sung songs about it, but I wonder…I wonder if you really know what it means…
LAURA: What? What is it?
GOD: It’s a very expensive word…….
LAURA: Expensive?
GOD: It cost the one thing most precious to me…. My own son.
LAURA: (a beat,then) What’s…what’s the word, Lord?
HOPE: (begins singing “Grace Like Rain”…standing at the back of the crowd or standing in place) Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me (ADD MARIA) I once was lost but now I'm found Was blind but now I see so clearly (ADD HANNAH) Hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me Hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, washed away
GOD: The word is Grace…the word that fills the gap between you and me…the word is Christ, Laura.
HOPE, HANNAH, LAURA: 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved (LAURA JOINS IN) How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed
Hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me Hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, washed away
LAURA: (to the audience) Please take somebody’s hand…sing with me… believe with me.
ALL: When we've been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We've no less days to sing Your praise Than when we first begun
Hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me Hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, washed away
