LAURA: (enters, then) God?
GOD: Hi Laura.
LAURA: It’s been a great summer.
GOD: You talk like it’s over.
LAURA: No…no, I didn’t mean that. Well, I mean it is sad to see things come to an end.
GOD: Do me a favor?
LAURA: Sure.
GOD: Don't say that again.
LAURA: Huh?
GOD: Don't even think that…not for a moment. No matter how many camps you’ve been to, no matter how many trips you’ve made this altar this summer..no matter how many hot dogs you’ve served… I have some kids coming in tomorrow morning …well…for them it’s a first-time, once-in-a-lifetime experience. I love you, Laura, but don't you dare tell yourself that anything is about to come to an end.
LAURA: Yeah. Sorry. But you know…I get this same feeling every time camp starts. When we introduced each other tonight at the meeting I got the same feeling in my stomach… The staff…they’re so experienced. They know so much. And me…well, sometimes I feel like a first-time counselor who’s not sure what she’s doing.
GOD: Good.
LAURA: Huh?
GOD: That’s good. That’s just where I want you. Read the stories of my saints in the Old Testament. Not a one of them felt prepared. All they were was…well…willing.
LAURA: Sometimes…and this sounds really strange…but sometimes I wish I could be in the mind of the other counselors…They seem so confident…I wish I knew what they were praying…
GOD: Okay.
LAURA: What?
GOD: You wanna know what’s on the hearts of other counselors tonight?
LAURA: Can you do that?
GOD: I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.
LAURA: Sorry.
GOD: (laughing) That’s okay, Laura. Let’s uh…let’s take a little trip, okay? I’ll let you in on what’s going on around the room right now.
COUNSELOR ONE: (prays..ends with “Help me, Lord.”)
LAURA: (a beat, then) Wow. I had no idea.
GOD: Keep listening.
COUNSELOR TWO: (prays..ends with “Help me, Lord.”)
LAURA: That’s …that’s amazing. They’re as helpless as I am.
GOD: I like your choice of words. Just one more…
COUNSELOR THREE: (prays…ends with “Help me, Lord.”)
LAURA: I guess…I guess I’m not alone.
GOD: Not…even…close.
LAURA: (a beat, then) It’s gonna be a great weekend, Lord. (a beat) Thanks.
GOD: Think it’s about over?
LAURA: Not…even…close. (she exits)
