LAURA: (enters, then) God?
GOD: Laura…what a surprise. I mean..not that you’re talking to me, but this was the place where I always met Travis.
LAURA: I know. He told me. Is it okay if I come?
GOD: (a beat, then) Nothing could make me happier.
LAURA: It’s…it’s quiet here.
GOD: Yeah. Oh, it gets noisy sometimes, and when the music starts things can get pretty loud, but if you really want to hear me…Yeah…quiet is best.
LAURA: Weird, isn’t it? I mean, it’s a performing arts camp with all the music and dancing and racket… but the times at camp I really remember..the ones that really stick with me…it seems like they’re always the quiet times….just you and me.
GOD: Just you and me.
LAURA: Does that happen to everybody?
GOD: No.
LAURA: No?
GOD: Some… and sometimes many. But not everyone. You like the camp spaghetti?
LAURA: What?
GOD: Spaghetti. Long strings of pasta with sauce and cheese..
LAURA: (laughing) I mean…I know what spaghetti is and yeah, I love it, but..
GOD: Some people come to camp and only taste the salad parts…the performing…they miss the good stuff.. .the spaghetti.
LAURA: That’s funny.
GOD: Don't tell Ralph. He’s proud of his spaghetti.
LAURA: No, I mean…
GOD: I know what you mean. But you see, I’ve got the full-meal deal going on out here, and if you only take a part of it…if you only let yourself experience the performing part..well… you go away sort of….how I put it?
LAURA: Hungry?
GOD: (a beat, then) You’re one sharp girl, Laura. Yeah…you go away hungry. It’s these times…times like this right now.. that really make a difference to both of us.
LAURA: (a long beat, then) I like this, Lord. Just being quiet with you. Just…listening.
GOD: Me too. Lots of people talk. Few listen.
LAURA: I remember a time at camp… (describe a time when you were alone with God and it was beautiful and you still remember it.. end with. . .) “So…could we do this again?”
GOD: Are you kidding? It’s my favorite part of camp.
LAURA: I guess I’d better go…
GOD: Keep performing, Laura.. keep singing…keep dancing…keep shouting and running and hugging and loving, but remember the best part…
LAURA: Spaghetti?
GOD: Yeah…don't forget the spaghetti. It’s the part that stays with you.
