Laura and God, PAC II,3
(need to contact four counselors ahead of time & tell musician about ending song)
LAURA: It’s been a great weekend, Lord.
GOD: I know.
LAURA: Always different, but always with this same feeling. It seems like every inch of this place. . . everywhere I look. . . .I think of memories.
GOD: I know what you mean.
LAURA: My first dance down in the cafeteria…
GOD: Yeah.
LAURA: When they first jerked me out of my dad’s car out in the parking lot.
GOD: And how scared you were to go to drama.
LAURA: I still am. (a beat, then) But more than that…the people.
GOD: Yep. The people. And there’s one special place where those people became very close to you.
LAURA: (look around…then walk up to the altar) Up here. The people who prayed with me.
GOD: Yeah. The place where you prayed together. Lots of people have great memories of the final altar time.
LAURA: Really?
GOD: Just ask around.
LAURA: (people whom you’ve cued in ahead of time…you call on the first counselor who talks about a specific and memorable prayer time they had with someone up there) ______________? You have any memories of the altar? (the counselor responds). I love that. (call on another) _______________? How about you? (the counselor responds). I like those stories.
GOD: I like this….try one more.
LAURA: ____________? How about you? (the counselor responds)
GOD: It’s interesting…you can pray anywhere, but you’re right….there’s something special about praying with a friend at the end of camp. Sort of puts the frosting on the cake.
LAURA: I like that.
GOD: So…that time’s nearly here again.
LAURA: I know. I’m looking forward to it. I was just thinking…the first time I came up here I wasn’t sure what to pray about it.
GOD: And then I told you.
LAURA: And then you told me.
GOD: Sometimes….sometimes Laura. I just want to talk. Sometimes I just want you to listen.
LAURA: I like that. Altar time.
GOD: And the best part is that there’s no such thing.
LAURA: Huh?
GOD: As a certain time to pray with someone…(cue a staff member to bring a camper to the altar and pray with him or her…remind them to get up there rather quickly) My altar never closes.
LAURA: (watching them pray) Wow. Memories.
GOD: Yeah . . . and we’re still making them…and you and I.
LAURA: (begin singing “Alleluia” ….2nd verse: “He’s my savior” … 3rd verse “Lord, I love you.” 4th verse: back to “Alleluia”) … (if they’re still praying when you finish singing, simply leave and we’ll continue the music until they’re done)
