Laura and God, PAC II, Staff Meeting
(prepare Mr. West or someone to switch to “Sanctuary” at the end) LAURA: Hi, God.
GOD: Welcome back, Laura. Been a long time.
LAURA: I know. I can’t tell you how much I’ve missed it.
GOD: So…how are you doing?
LAURA: I’m okay. I’m tired, but I’m okay.
GOD: I’ll fix the tired part when the first camper rolls in tomorrow morning.
LAURA: I know. I was thinking tonight of a favorite scripture . . from Matthew.. “Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”
GOD: I like that.
LAURA: I need the sleep.
GOD: Would it…uh…bother you greatly if I told you that you were missing the point?
LAURA: Missing the point?
GOD: Yeah. Sorry. I don’t mean to be a bother.
LAURA: No.
GOD: That scripture…the one you just quoted. . .
LAURA: Yeah?
GOD: I wasn’t talking about putting you to bed tonight and holding your hand while I sang you a lullaby.
LAURA: Oh.
GOD: I was talking about getting you out of bed. . . . getting you on your feet. . . to wake you up from being half dead while you’re alive.
LAURA: But it says . . .
GOD: I promise to give you a rest from your worries, Laura. . . a rest from your busyness. . . a rest from your sin.
LAURA: Oh.
GOD: You can’t be me to those kids tomorrow unless you take a rest from everything that’s bothering you. . . . . . . . . . . I hope that doesn’t disappoint you.
LAURA: No…not at all. I just…I just hadn’t thought of it that way. So how. . .
GOD: How…yeah, that’s the part people tend to skip over. How does that verse go?
LAURA: Come unto me . . .
GOD: Stop..
LAURA: That’s it?
GOD: That’s it.
LAURA: Come unto me.
GOD: Come unto me. No “do this” or “don’t do that,” simply come unto me. . . tonight. . . now.
LAURA: (a long beat, then) I like that.
GOD: Come unto me tonight. . . and I will fill you with the spirit . . . of life. Personal contact with Jesus changes everything.
LAURA: But. . .
GOD: I promise.
LAURA: (a beat, then) Thanks, Lord.
GOD: Thank you…for listening. You only have one job tonight. . . personal contact with Jesus.
LAURA: (a beat, then) I like that. . . . . so. . . .
GOD: So….talk to me.
LAURA: (singing) “Lord prepare me to be sanctuary…pure and holy, tried and true…. With thanksgiving . . . I’ll be a living . . . sanctuary for you. (then repeat and on the second time through, exit)
