Maddy & God, IV, 1
Cc: to Brock
MADDY: Hey Lord.
GOD: Hi, Maddy.
MADDY: Great camp.
GOD: Always.
MADDY: …but this is weird.
GOD: What’s that?
MADDY: I mean, here I am a counselor and everything…
GOD: Yeah.
MADDY: But I still have the same problem.
GOD: Which is?
MADDY: It still makes me nervous to meet people for the first time. I’m always like that. I went to a summer camp when it was little and I didn’t sleep the night before. I was afraid people wouldn’t like me.
GOD: And you were wrong?
MADDY: Yeah. And this past school year I signed up for a college class and I was so nervous about meeting people.
GOD: And what happened?
MADDY: They were some of the most wonderful people I ever met.
GOD: You were wrong.
MADDY: I was wrong. But even this morning….I’m supposed to be a counselor but I’d almost have to force myself to walk up to a new camper and say hello.
GOD: And you were wrong.
MADDY: Every time.
GOD: At least you’ve got a perfect record.
MADDY: So what am I doing wrong? I’m going to be a senior in high school and I’m still shy when it comes to getting to know people.
GOD: Is there anyone out there right now who you don’t know?
MADDY: Sure…lots of them.
GOD: Pick one.
MADDY: Now?
GOD: Yep. Pick someone you haven’t met yet.
MADDY: This is sort of embarrassing.
GOD: Why?
MADDY: I don’t know. I don’t know what they’ll think of me. I don’t know if they’ll like me.
GOD: Have you ever thought of becoming an opera singer?
MADDY: Huh?
GOD: You seem to be warming up… “Me-me-me-me!”
MADDY: Sorry.
GOD: Let’s do a game show! Here’s your host! Brock Gwaltney!
BROCK: (runs to beside you) Here’s our first contestant . . . Maddy Albers!
MADDY: What are you doing, Brock?
BROCK: Don’t argue. I work for God. Maddy, tell me the correct answer. Christ said that His greatest commandment was to love the Lord with all your heart, your soul and your mind. BUT!...what was his second greatest commandment? A) Think about yourself all the time! B) Worry about people liking you, or C) Love your neighbor as yourself.
MADDY: (looks at Brock a long moment, then) I get the point.
BROCK: Then you win. (he returns to his seat)
MADDY: (look at the camper in the audience that you indicated earlier, then go to them. . . make a little conversation.. What’s your name? Where are you from? Are you having fun at camp? Etc….then return to the front) It worked, Lord.
GOD: It always works, Maddy. Don’t think about what to say. Don’t think about what they’ll think of you. Just start by loving them and let me take care of the rest.
MADDY: (a beat, then) I like that.
GOD: You’ll love it.
MADDY: Later?
GOD: Always. (You exit)
