Matt & God III
Week 3, 2002
MATT: (entering) Well, it’s been quite a day.
GOD: You’re tellin’ me.
MATT: So…how’s it been for you?
GOD: That is so nice. Nobody ever asks me that.
MATT: I’m not just anybody.
GOD: Yea. You bad. Tell you the truth, it’s been a great day. How about you?
MATT: I got to know some pretty cool people.
GOD: Great. So throw me a long ball. Ask for anything and watch me knock it out of the park.
MATT: You like baseball?
GOD: I’m a Cub fan. You know.. “The meek shall inherit the earth….?” There’s nobody meeker than the Cubbies. Go ahead. What’s on your heart tonight, Matt?
MATT: Well..one thing. I mean..we’ve had fun. We’ve laughed and we’ve cried together. I mean it’s been a real blast..but there’s one thing, Lord….
GOD: Yea?
MATT: I still don’t know. I just don’t know for sure that everybody has accepted your Son as their savior. I mean, they all want to live a good life…
GOD: Stupid.
MATT: Huh?
GOD: That’s really stupid. Do they believe me? Have they read what I’ve written?
MATT: I don’t understand.
GOD: Being good has nothing to do with it! Good grief, how many times do I have to say it? Matt, if I waited for everyone to clean up their act before I welcomed them into heaven, then there’d be a lot of empty real estate up here. It’s not about being…good.
MATT: But they think…..
GOD: Then tell them!
MATT: Uh-oh. You gettin’ mad again?
GOD: Yes it makes me angry when I give my only Son to die for their sins, then they throw it back in my face and try to do it all themselves. And they can’t, Matt! They can never earn their way to heaven.
MATT: I guess I knew that. It’s just…it’s so hard to believe.
GOD: I know. Almost makes me wish I’d have made it harder. Look out there, Matt. Look out there at my children. There’s this boy, Matt. He thinks he’s done so many bad things that no one will ever forgive him. Show him, Matt. Show him the cross where everything gets wiped clean.
MATT: (a long beat, then) I will, Lord.
GOD: There’s a girl out there, Matt. She gets so lonely sometimes that it actually hurts. She thinks she’s in this alone and she doesn’t know she take it all to me. She’s out there, Matt. Find her. Tell her.
MATT: (a beat, then) I will, Lord. (a beat, then) It’s been quite a day, Lord.
GOD: Yea. But just wait ‘til night. (Matt leaves)
