Song Ideas
Opening song..Welcome to Camp Sunshine..need to syncopate the chorus a bit more.. a little more “black” Need to rework opening lines.
Act I song ideas.. .p. 4.. Gloria and campers… “The meaning of Hell” Why do we come to bible camp? To know the true meaning of hell!
Scene 5 and 6 of Act I…too long a stretch without a song… Put a song in the boys’ cabin? I’m such a stud! And this is why I come to camp!
Nadine’s song…p. 15..in the girls’ cabin?
Insert Uncle Ernie’s rap at the top of I, 7… p. 15?...Then go into the hormone lecture?
Ted’s song about being Jewish? (if not, then we need an ending to this scene… p. 20)
Put Sister Lagasi in the show…just glimpses of her until the end..then she has a song?
We need a “simple” ballad somewhere..Just guitar or piano..to give us musical contrast.
Things to accomplish in Act II: --a few more short blackouts in the woods ---an emotional set-up for Margo to sing to Micah --Uncle Ernie’s “dream scene” where he’s conked in the head and reverts to his youth as a young camper…other campers enter to play roles…maybe a song? This could be his “Damascus Road” moment where he changes attitude. . --The reconciliation scene between Margo and Gloria? --Do something with the Talent Show idea out in the woods? ---Decide what to do with the Food song --The “When You Fall” scene between Micah and Margo should come right before the final scene.

Roger… A song/scene idea for Camp Sunshine… A boy and girl are sitting with others around a campfire…Ah, camp fires are so romantic.. Yeah, I always end up saying things I regret in the morning. I wish I had the nerve to go sit by her. He’s looking at me. Why doesn’t he move over here? Etc… The gist of the thing: they start out singing a very simple campfire-type song… each his or her own song… Then we go into “dream land” as each sings in the voice and character they’d like to be…it turns into a very dramatic, over-the-top love song…then at the end they each take their place at each side of the campfire and finish the song in the opening simple matter. Doesn’t this sound like fun? Kb

While you were basking in glory, I was home working on Camp Sunshine. I had written a song called 'When You Fall", then replaced it with "Stand Up". I now realize that W.Y.F. is a song between a man/boy and a woman/ girl. Maybe Skip could actually fall in love, but is rebuffed because of his reputation. He is singing "I can't take the fall, I don't want love at all"... and our little tramp, Margo sees him, comes and takes his hand "...and when you find strength in a friend, just hold an tight and you'll realize, that when you fall, you won't need to fall alone..." It may be a way to show us that Margo is much deeper than we think...she's just playing these boys as fools, because she knows she can. For some reason I truly love Margo now, and Skip is the only one to whom she shows her true self. I keep thinking Margo is the only one at camp that really has a handle on life. She knows who she is, and who she will be. This part of her life is just for fun. I think a touching scene between Margo and Gloria could be good. Margo knowing that Gloria was once, more than she is now. Maybe even seeing a bit of Gloria in herself. through all the years Margo has been coming to camp, Gloria has helped her find herself. I can see Margo going up to Gloria, after everyone else is on the bus, kissing her cheek and telling her thank you.Gloria realizes that who she (Gloria) is, is more than she believed, and then breaks in to perkiness the world has never seen...she likes being Gloria...at least for this moment. Skip will find a friend in Margo, Lucille will un-wad the letters she never mailed home, and Uncle Ernie will grab the hot tailpipe of the bus, just to show Satan he can take the heat...he can't. I hope you don't mind the ideas, but I got tingles when I was rewriting the song. Maybe I'm just getting the flu. Roger Storm comes in…Uncle Ernie keeps getting ready…then the rain hits and he has to change.. The conflicts and revelations of the campers, as they pair up to look for the lost boy...maybe Uncle Ernie doesn't make the team because he is so busy securing his gear for the search. Maybe a funny little song about him wanting to be the one to find the boy...sort of reliving his glory days of search and rescue in the Marines The Jewish boy's song about wanting to show the campers who he really is...taking off the mask Finale... being too much of this world...re-connecting with God...
Uncle Ernie conks himself in the head and has a flashback to his first day as a boy camper. Dream scene…other campers assume new personalities. Making Nadine a bit more judgmental of the other campers, according to scripture...so her wondering if God would still love her if she dances on Broadway would be a real concern for her Margo knows who she is and who she will become, she only teases the boys because she can. She has a good handle on life (could be put into Act I…Camp Funtime) This is just a thought...What if we use the God voice like you do with Travis, at the beginning of the show with the curtain closed, lights out, God is saying..."It's that time of year again...my children will be here soon...etc." ( I have a pretty cool vamp in the opening number, before the song actually starts) The lights come on and the campers make their way to the stage. It would be fun if we could tell the audience what became of the campers in their later years...maybe God could do that as the finale song is playing. I really have no idea how we could that. Maybe a camper talks with God throughout the show...i.e. Travis and God
Some camper is alone..Mark?..Has a serious talk with God..others do too? Gloria finds redemption in a thank you from one camper, and she finds a little of who she used to be...for that one moment, she likes who she has become Skip is and always will be Skip a talent show at camp? We never see the show, just the rehearsals...Gloria's favorite part of camp campers conversations in their bunks after lights out.
Margo finds Micah on her own.
Songs in Act II.. Micah’s had enough…he can’t take the pain.. .(the dance then enters and symbolizes this) then Margo enters, touches on theme of the finale, sort of saying That’s ridiculous you put that much weight into what they think..God doesn’t see you that way..He’s your strength and I will be your strength… Jess' dance in the woods, showing the fear and desperation of the boy...then maybe segueing in to "When You Fall" a duet...then the other campers joining in as they arrive…seques into… When you Fall… Margo to Micah when she finds him…. Gloria’s song …Belle of the Ball..put it in Act I Margo’s Camp Fun Time .. Act I Finale… being too much of this world...re-connecting with God... drawn more to what they want instead of what God wants…How do I approach God again? Kids trying to learn their talent things while in the woods.
