TRAVIS: Hey God! I’m back!

GOD: Yea…I saw you come in. TRAVIS: Man, this is the best. I mean, this is my favorite time of the year ..coming to PAC. GOD: Let me tell you a little secret, Trav. It’s mine, too. TRAVIS: Cool. God has favorites? GOD: Lots of ‘em. My kingdom isn’t a democracy, Travis. I’m the king. So… whatta ya got planned for the weekend? TRAVIS: Oh man… I’ve been thinkin’ about it all week. There’s this fantastic mime we’re workin’ on and…the dance. I want to jump into the dance group for this one number. And then in my small group we’re gonna talk about… GOD: Travis? TRAVIS: (a beat, then) Yea? GOD: That’s…uh…that’s all you’re thinking about? The things you’re going to do? TRAVIS: Well…yea. I mean, mostly. But they’re all for You, Lord. I’m doin’ ‘em all for you. GOD: I know that. You do a lot of … “doing” for me. In fact, that’s mainly what you do. TRAVIS: (a beat) Then I…I mean, I don’t understand. Isn’t that all you want me to do? GOD: (a beat) No. TRAVIS: (a beat) No. GOD: Oh Trav. Some people never get this. Lots of people never get this. They get so caught up in doing …in serving… that that becomes God to them. The Great Who Can Serve God the Most contest. Tell you the truth, that’s not what it’s all about. TRAVIS: (a beat) So…uh…what exactly is it about? GOD: How do you put your mimes together? TRAVIS: Aren’t you changing the subject? GOD: No. Answer my question. What do you do when your group designs a mime? No wait…try it this way. For tonight’s mime, just do it first. Don’t think about , don’t rehearse it. Just get up there and do it. You can rehearse it after you’re done. TRAVIS: That …uh…I mean, if you don’t mind me saying so… That’d be ridiculous. It wouldn’t work. We always pray about it, then we spend a lot of time thinking, then we show it to the campers and… GOD: Yea. That’s what I thought. Grab a camper right now. TRAVIS: Grab a camper? GOD: Is this too difficult for you? TRAVIS: No. No. (goes to the audience and grabs a camper, raises them to their feet) Look, I don’t know what’s going on here, but God said to do it. GOD: You are so cool, Trav. Now… put them out there in the middle. (Travis takes the camper to some distance from him.) Good. Good. Now shake their hand. No! Don’t get near them. Just shakes their hand. TRAVIS: I uh…I can’t reach. GOD: Okay. Then give them a hug. TRAVIS: (makes a silly attempt to hug them long distance) This isn’t working. GOD: In fact, you look pretty silly trying. TRAVIS: Thanks. GOD: So what do you need? TRAVIS: Well…I mean, I need to get close enough to… GOD: Do what? TRAVIS: I need to get close enough to… GOD: So move. Get closer. (Travis does.) Now shake. (he shakes the camper’s hand) Now hug. (Travis hugs the camper) Now think. What made it so easy? TRAVIS: I got closer? GOD: Yeah. You got closer. Now put the camper back where you found them. They look pretty embarrassed. (Travis takes the camper back to his/her seat.) Think you’re getting the message? TRAVIS: My main job is just getting closer to you. GOD: Yea. Just take a step closer. That’s all you have to do. I’ll do the rest. TRAVIS: One more thing, God. How come… I mean, how come I’ve always got these things I can’t figure out, then when you explain it, it’s all so…you know… simple? GOD: I didn’t do a thing, Travis. It was you. TRAVIS: Me? GOD: You just moved closer.
