TRAVIS: Hey Lord?
GOD: Hi Trav. How’d you like that_________ (an act)? TRAVIS: Great. These guys get better every year. GOD: Thanks. That was my idea. TRAVIS: Lord… I know it seems like I save up my biggest questions for camp. GOD: I’m just glad you ask them. TRAVIS: Okay. This is a tough one… Hope you don’t mind. GOD: Should I sit down? TRAVIS: (a beat, then) I don’t know. Can you? GOD: (laughs) What’s on your mind, Travis? TRAVIS: How do I….I mean.. How am I supposed to…. I mean, is there a way I can…? GOD: You’re so good with words, Travis. Why don’t you just come out and say it? TRAVIS: That reminds me of another question. Why does God want me to ask things when he already knows what I’m going to ask? GOD: In your case, I do it for the entertainment. TRAVIS: (laughs, then) Okay. Here goes. .. How am I supposed to know I’m doing what you want me to do? I mean with my life. GOD: Now that is one fine question. TRAVIS: Thanks. (a beat as he listens for an answer, then sees there’s not one coming) Okay, I went to college, I had a bunch of jobs and now I’m working at ISD and I like the job. It makes me happy and I get to help people, but… I don’t know… How do I know this is exactly what you want me to do with my life? GOD: You went to college…. TRAVIS: Yea… GOD: You worked several jobs… TRAVIS: Yea…. GOD: You just got a great job at ISD…. TRAVIS: Uh-huh. GOD: And NOW you ask me what you should be doing? TRAVIS: (a beat, embarrassed) Am I…you know…late? GOD: (laughs) No. No, you’re never too late to ask that question. And you should never stop asking it. How’d you get to camp this year? TRAVIS: Huh? GOD: How’d you get here? Fly? TRAVIS: I rode with Nick. GOD: Then you did fly. He drives too fast. Who turned the steering wheel? TRAVIS: I rode with Nick! He was doing the steering! GOD: Did you try to make a right turn while he was driving? TRAVIS: Uh…that’d be kind of hard. I’d have fallen out of the car. He was driving, Lord. I didn’t have to make any big decisions. GOD: So he offered you a ride, you got in, and you went where he took you. TRAVIS: (a beat) I think I see where this is going. GOD: All those tough decisions, Travis… TRAVIS: Yea… GOD: Let me drive. Just get in with me. Remember our earlier talk? TRAVIS: Just get close? GOD: And if you get close enough, you won’t have any choice but to go my direction. It’s not about begging me for answers about your future, buddy. It’s about getting close to me. Period. Let me drive. TRAVIS: (a beat, then) I guess …I guess sometimes I just wish you’d show me the road map. GOD: And take out all the adventure? No way… Life with me is a lot more exciting than any trip you could plan. Just hop in, okay? (Travis begins to leave) And Trav? TRAVIS: (stopping) Yea? GOD: You were right. These guys …and you...just get better every year.
