TRAVIS: (entering) It’s been great, Lord.
GOD: You’re tellin’ me, Trav. TRAVIS: But I wish… GOD: Yea? TRAVIS: I wish… I don’t know. I just wish that when I leave camp I could…you know.. I wish I could…. GOD: …take the Orange Elixer with you? TRAVIS: (laughs) You know. It’s the praying, Lord. We pray all the time at camp and it seems so….so easy. So real and natural and …well….I like it. It’s one of my favorite parts of camp. GOD: But when you leave? TRAVIS: Well…I do okay for awhile, then it becomes…you know… sort of a … GOD: A duty? An obligation? TRAVIS: (a beat, then) Exactly. I’m sorry. I just can’t believe you’d honor my prayers if I felt like it was something I had to do …instead of wanting to do it. GOD: Well…you’re right. Sometimes I wonder why people bother. They pray at the same times. They pray the same prayers. You wouldn’t believe this, Trav, but sometimes when people are praying they aren’t even thinking of me. TRAVIS: Well….yea, I would believe it. You’re talking about me. GOD: Yea…that was the general idea. TRAVIS: So how…I mean, how can I get over this, Lord? How can I get better at wanting to pray? GOD: You ever watch a dancer? TRAVIS: Watch a dancer? I’ve been watching them all weekend! That’s one of my favorite parts of camp. GOD: Yea…me too. (Maria stands and enters the area. She does a free-form ballet to Jerry’s guitar as Travis and God continue. Gradually, Travis walks to the center of the area and Maria dances around him.) Look at how she does it, Travis. She’s not thinking about where to go next… She’s not conscious of anyone else in the room… She’s just thinking about the dance.. Right now she’s just thinking about me. There’s no beginning to her dance…there’s no end. Have you ever watched Maria walk through the cafeteria? She’s still dancing in her heart. She doesn’t have a start time and a stop time and she never dances exactly the same way twice. It’s always personal…It’s always real….When she talks to you, she’s still dancing. She dances when she sings and when she runs and when she sits down to rest…She never stops dancing, Travis. That’s… that’s prayer. TRAVIS: (a beat as he returns to his podium and Maria continues to dance) That’s..that’s prayer. And it’s so easy, Lord. It’s so natural.. It’s something I want to do. ..be in prayer with you all day long. GOD: No set time… Always different…always changing… always…. Beautiful. TRAVIS: (watches Maria gently leave the area, then) That is so cool. GOD: Yea. So very cool. TRAVIS: Thanks, Lord. This is …this is gonna change things for me. It’s gonna change things a lot. GOD: Hey Trav…? TRAVIS: Yea? GOD: At the altar tonight? TRAVIS: Yea? GOD: Let’s dance. (Travis smiles and exits)
