The Sad Little Dragon Who Loved To Sing

This is a story about a little dragon. He absolutely adored music. This little dragon loved to whistle and he loved to sing. He had a very beautiful voice. But, (omit the comma) every time he sang, it would end in disaster. He heard a bird singing in a tree. When he whistled back to the little bird, a stream of fire shot out of the little dragon’s mouth burning the little bird & the tree on which the bird sat! When he tried to sing in the waterfall during his morning shower the flames erupting from his mouth boiled the water, killing all the fish in the pool! He tried to control the flames but the more he tried the harder it became. This made the little dragon very sad. Finally the poor little dragon was so saddened by his failures that he hid in his cave. He was afraid of hurting anyone or embarrassing himself with his awful flaw. The more he hid the sadder he became until he could no longer come out of his cave. He hid in his cave so long that he lost his desire to live. Years passed and one day, when he was a very old dragon, he awoke to hear a strange noise coming from the front of his cave. He crept to the mouth of his cave to see a young boy crying! The boy was huddled and shivering in the early morning mist. He asked the child why he was crying. The boy had never seen a dragon before was not afraid of him. He was glad he was no longer alone for he had become lost on his way to the market and was cold and hungry. Taking pity on the child the dragon sang a little song and a small flame shot out and ignited a small pile of dead branches in the middle of the cave. Soon the fire warmed the cave taking the chill out of the air. The boy was no longer shivering but he was still hungry. He had carried some sausages with him on his journey but he had no way to cook them. The dragon whistled a little tune and a stream of fire licked out cooking all the sausages golden brown. The young boy laughed with delight and began to eat the sausages, soon having his fill. ‘That is quite a talent you have,’ said the boy. ‘I have never before tasted such delicious food or heard such beautiful melodies. Why are you hiding here when the people of my country would love you so much?’ ‘I am afraid that people will laugh at me, or that I might hurt someone. Have you ever seen a creature that breathes fire when it sings?’ replied the dragon. The boy thought about it for a moment and then said (I’d suggest putting your moral in right here…something like, “No, but being different doesn’t mean being bad.” or something like that) ‘No. But I’ve never seen one like you and I’ve never tasted such delicious food before! I think you should come with me to the village and cook some more of these delicious sausages for the people there. I think you could do great things with this talent of yours. You will never know if you don’t try.’ So the young boy persuaded the dragon to come home with him. And you’ll never guess what happened! They boy was right! He and his dragon friend went to each neighborhood where he would sing and cook sausages or and so many other delicious foods! . Each time he sang the people applauded and cheered loudly. Then they would sit down to a meal of the tasty food that the dragon cooked. Everywhere he went the people asked him to sing more songs and cook more food. But they were sad to see him leave. They wanted him to stay! This made the dragon very happy and he sang even more! Soon the dragon was so busy that he decided to build a place where all the people could come to hear him sing and eat his food all the time. Today operates the town’s first and only restaurant where you get your meal cooked by a singing dragon! People travel from near and far just to eat his food and to hear him sing. He is no longer a sad lonely dragon because he has lots of friends. He learned a lot from the young boy that day. He learned that the thing he thought was his weakness turned out to be his strength. It was what made him truly unique! He also learned that it is never too late to become what you were meant to be. All you have to do is try. +
