Travis And God, II-3

TRAVIS: (enters) God? (looks around, a beat) Hey, God? (to someone in the audience) You seen God? (a beat) Hello? Anybody there? (a beat) This is a weird way to end camp. I can’t find God. (a beat) Uh..Nick..Dave. Sorry you called my name. It looks like this isn’t working this time. (begins to leave) GOD: Where are you going? TRAVIS: God! Where’d you go? I thought I’d lost you. GOD: Because I didn’t answer? TRAVIS: Well…yeah. I guess so. GOD: (sighs) Happens all the time. TRAVIS: But where were you… GOD: Right here. I was just…listening. You ever do that? Just listen? TRAVIS: I try to. But God…sometimes that happens when I leave camp, too. I …you know, I talk to you and it seems like I can’t hear your answer. I pray and ask what to do and sometimes it sounds like …well, like you’re not answering. GOD: In your whole life, Travis. Ever since you were little… TRAVIS: That was yesterday… GOD: (laughs) Yeah, but remember, you’re cute… Ever since you were young. There has never been one word, one prayer….one…one tear or one bit of laughter that I haven’t heard. TRAVIS: Really? GOD: I’ve been there when you went out and when you came in and when you got up and when you went to bed. Not one word has come out of your mouth…not one thought has come out of your heart that I haven’t heard. You ever had a friend like that? TRAVIS: Well…No. Nobody’s been that close to me. GOD: I am. I always will be. And those times…those times when you wonder where I am…. Well, you’re just not paying attention. When _____ got up there and did her/his __________.. I was there. Last night at the campfire when _________... I was right there. TRAVIS: But sometimes it seems like you… GOD: Don’t answer? TRAVIS: Well…yeah. GOD: I have my reasons. .. some day in heaven I’ll tell you all about them, but frankly you’ll be having too good a time to care by then. Just trust me, Travis. I’m there. I will never leave you or forsake you. I’m there. TRAVIS: (a beat) Thanks. That…that makes me feel a lot better. GOD: Wanna take my hand? TRAVIS: Your hand? GOD: Don’t worry. I washed. TRAVIS: No! No! I mean..well, I’ve never taken God’s hand before. GOD: It’s really pretty cool. You ought to try it. Go ahead. TRAVIS: (an awkward beat) Uh…where… You know.. Where would I ..uh…Where would I find that hand? GOD: Right in front of you. TRAVIS: (looks in the front row and names a person sitting there) _______? GOD: Yep. Take my hand. TRAVIS: (goes to the person and takes their hands) Like this? GOD: I’ve got pretty nice hands, don’t you think? TRAVIS: But I’m just… GOD: That’s me. And in the second row…and in the back.. I am all over this place. So when you leave camp and you want to get close to me, just look around. Look into face right in front of you. That’s me. Don’t waste your time looking for answers…do something. Reach out there and touch somebody …and that’s…that’s where you’ll find me. TRAVIS: So when it seems like I can’t find you… GOD: Look right in front of you. I’m there. I’m always there. TRAVIS: That’s..uh..that’s a pretty good sermon. GOD: Yea.. I’m a heck of a preacher. See you tonight at the altar… You’ll always find me there. (Travis smiles and exits)
