Travis & God III

PAC IV, 2002

TRAVIS: (enters) Man the camp goes by fast, Lord.

GOD: In the blink of an eye.

TRAVIS: I don’t know what it is…the singing, the small groups… all this fun..

GOD: I personally think it’s the orange drink, but go ahead.

TRAVIS: (laughs) I vote for the butterscotch pudding.

GOD: You would. So what have you got on your mind, big guy?

TRAVIS: Well, it’s that time again and I can feel it coming.

GOD: Feel what?

TRAVIS: I’m afraid, Lord. I’m afraid I won’t be able to take the PAC camp feeling with me.

GOD: No, you probably won’t.

TRAVIS: Huh?

GOD: What?

TRAVIS: Is that..I mean…did you really say that?

GOD: Of course I did. You do you think I am?

TRAVIS: But if….

GOD: This is a high, Trav. You’ve been surrounded by people who love you and that’s just the way I intended it. The whole world isn’t like this and that’s why I’m sending you out into it.

TRAVIS: Lord, if I go into Walmart and yell “Hug Attack!” they’ll think I’m nuts.

GOD: You would be. But I’d like it. Go ye therefore and make disciples of all nations….yea, I say, even unto the furthermost regions of Walmart. (a beat) And your family. And your school.

TRAVIS: But it’s so hard…

GOD: Wimp.

TRAVIS: Huh?

GOD: Pay attention. God just called you a wimp. Trav, I’ve got people around the world giving their lives for the gospel. Forgive me if I’m not sympathetic to your whining.

TRAVIS: That’s tough talk.

GOD: I’m a tough God. I mean what I say. Most people complain about how hard it is to be a Christian when the truth is, they don’t try. If they’d ask for my help I’d make it easy. Know how many times the word loves appears in the Bible? 710.

TRAVIS: You counted?

GOD: I wrote it.

TRAVIS: Oh. Yea.

GOD: People leave PAC camp and the feeling goes away…Why? Because they don’t take my love out there with them. Love is a verb, Trav. It’s action. It’s doing something about it. You go home and treat your sister or your Mom or your friends the same you always did then you come complaining to me because you’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’.

TRAVIS: Whoa. That Lovin’ Feelin’.

GOD: We should go on the road.

TRAVIS: Okay Lord, I will. Tomorrow I’ll….

GOD: Whoa..whoa…whoa.

TRAVIS: Whatsa matter?

GOD: Tomorrow?

TRAVIS: Sure. We leave camp tomorrow and….

GOD: What’s wrong with today? Right now?

TRAVIS: Now?

GOD: See that girl in the front row?

TRAVIS: Yea.

GOD: She feels the same way you do. She’s afraid she won’t be able to be a witness for me.

TRAVIS: Oh. So…I mean what do I….?

GOD: Pray with her.

TRAVIS: Now?

GOD: Don’t ask me that again. Did I promise you tomorrow? Nope. Just today. Go ahead. What’s a little embarrassment compared to having the Lord of the Universe on your side? Go ahead.

TRAVIS: (goes to the girl, raises her to her feet, hugs her…and prays… Pray an earnest prayer here…your own words.. asking God to go with you both, keep you strong, make you a witness to the power of His love…pray aloud.. after you’ve finished, let her sit down then I’ll speak)

GOD: That was good.

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) Better than orange drink?

GOD: Better than orange drink. Okay..we’ve got about ______ hours left. See how many you can reach… It’s gonna be different this year, Trav. (Trav looks to God a moment then exits) PAGE
