Travis & God, PAC II 2010
(Travis enters…wanders around a bit)
GOD: Trav? (Trav keeps thinking to himself) Hello? I know you can hear me…I can see you.
TRAVIS: Sorry. I was thinking.
GOD: We’re in trouble.
TRAVIS: (laughs, then) There’s something that’s always bothered me.
GOD: Hey…Scott’s important to this camp.
TRAVIS: (laughs) No, really…. Somebody in my small group told us that you use the word “love” 333 times in the Bible.
GOD: Yep. Counted them myself.
TRAVIS: Okay…here’s my question. You keep telling us to love one another.
GOD: Sounds like something I’d say, yes.
TRAVIS: I can do that…I really think I can love anybody, but here’s the hard part..
GOD: Okay.
TRAVIS: I don’t like everybody. (a beat) Does that make sense? Does that make me weird?
GOD: Well…
TRAVIS: Okay, I’m already weird. Does that make me wrong? Can I say I love somebody when I really don’t like them all that well?
GOD: Of course.
TRAVIS: (a beat then) How is that possible?
GOD: “Like..” I don’t know. I didn’t event the word “like.” I don’t even know what it means. When you say you like someone you don’t even mean that. You mean you like what they do or how they look or how they treat you. It’s really a pretty empty word.
TRAVIS: (a beat) Oh.
GOD: But Love…now that’s a power word. That’s ten-dollar word. “Like” comes and goes. “Love”…now that has staying power because I’m behind it.
TRAVIS: So… so if (a beat) …I’m still confused.
GOD: Look at there in the audience…tell someone you love them and tell them why.
TRAVIS: Right now?
GOD: You got an appointment somewhere?
TRAVIS: No…No…Okay… (pick out a couple of names “___, I love you because..” then another)
GOD: That’s love?
TRAVIS: Wasn’t it?
GOD: No.
TRAVIS: Oh gee.
GOD: You had a condition on everything. You said “I love you because…” That means when they’re no longer like that then you don’t love them any more. My love…real love…God’s love…doesn’t have conditions. Try me.
TRAVIS: Huh?
GOD: Try me. You ever done anything wrong?
TRAVIS: Lots of times.
GOD: Like…?
TRAVIS: Well… I used to talk back to my mom.
GOD: I love you.
TRAVIS: (a beat, then) I don’t always get things done.
GOD: I love you.
TRAVIS: Sometimes…..(this is hard) .. sometimes I go a long time without thinking of you at all, Lord.
GOD: (a long beat) And I love you, Travis.
TRAVIS: (a very long beat, then) I think I get it. (a beat) Thanks, Lord. And I love you…
GOD: Any conditions?
TRAVIS: No. No conditions. (Travis exits)
