Travis and God

PAC II, 3

Travis enters....

TRAVIS: Hey God!

GOD: Trav…good to see you again.. How’s camp for you?

TRAVIS: No offense, Lord. But that’s a silly question. PAC Camp is one of the best times of my life.

GOD: So what is it…the hotdogs or the orange stuff or the good-looking staff?

TRAVIS: Well…I like the hotdogs and the staff.

GOD: Sometimes the hotdogs are the staff.

TRAVIS: (laughs, then) But you know, God. I’ve got the same old worry when I leave this place.

GOD: They don’t have hotdogs where you live?

TRAVIS: (smiling) I never thought I’d say this, but “God, would you be serious?”

GOD: Sorry. I’ve had a great day…just wanted to spread the joy.

TRAVIS: It’s the same old thing, Lord. I’m always afraid that…you know.

GOD: When you leave here you’ll lose the feeling?

TRAVIS: Yea. I mean, sometimes it lasts all year long and …I don’t know… sometimes when I get back around my friends I feel like I was just faking it. I go back into the same old ruts and do the same old things. (a beat, then) Got any advice?

GOD: Yea.

TRAVIS: Well?

GOD: You’re a wimp.

TRAVIS: (a long beat) What?

GOD: Want me to spell it?

TRAVIS: A wimp?

GOD: W-I-M…

TRAVIS: I heard you! I heard you! I just can’t believe that God called me a wimp.

GOD: You never knew your great-great grandparents, did you?

TRAVIS: That’d be kinda hard.

GOD: They gave nearly every dime they had to build your town’s first church.

TRAVIS: Really?

GOD: And your grandmother… She prayed for you since the day you were born.

TRAVIS: Wow.

GOD: And your Mom…she spent some long nights worrying about you when you were young..praying that you’d be safe.

TRAVIS: I guess I know that.

GOD: Did you know more people have died….DIED in the last hundred years for the sake of Christ that at any other time in history? Did you know that they’re dying in Africa right now for the sake of my son?

TRAVIS: I…I guess I don’t keep up on the news.

GOD: That’s not the news, Trav. It’s my world. They’re dying for me. And now you think it might be tough to go back to your comfortable home and…

TRAVIS: I…I get your point. (a long beat) I’m sorry. I was being selfish. If they did that much then I can…

GOD: Yes. Yes you can. (a beat) Sorry about calling you a wimp.

TRAVIS: I deserved it..

GOD: Yea…yea, you did. (a beat) You CAN do this, Trav. Not because you have to, but because I need you to. You….your friends…you’re all I’ve got to take my love to the world.

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) I can do this.

GOD: And Trav, you’re really not a wimp.

TRAVIS: Thanks.

GOD: A whiner, maybe, but…

TRAVIS: Okay. Okay. I get the point.

GOD: Good…now go out there and make it.
