Travis and God
PAC III, 2
Travis enters....
TRAVIS: Hey God!
GOD: Trav! How’s your camp?
TRAVIS: Fantastic. Lord, PAC camp is about the best thing that…
GOD: Trav…
TRAVIS: Yea God?
GOD: I …well, I hate to stop you when you’re on a roll, but as usual, you’re a little bit fouled up.
TRAVIS: (a beat, then) I guess that’s not bad. I’m usually really fouled up.
GOD: (laughs) I know. Trav, it’s not PAC Camp. It’s me…
TRAVIS: What I meant was…
GOD: I know. I know what you meant, and I know when your head’s on straight you know the truth, but Trav…. This camp could blow away tomorrow and my work would still go on.
TRAVIS: What I meant was…
GOD: The counselors…they could all be replaced, Trav. The directors, the music, the dances and the campfires… They’re just tools. Tools who’ve said Yes to me.
TRAVIS: I … I know that.
GOD: If you’re walking to Jacksonville and somebody picks you up, do you thank the steering wheel for the ride?
TRAVIS: I uh… I thank the driver.
GOD: Yea. You thank the driver.
TRAVIS: (a long beat, then he smiles) But steering wheels are good. I like steering wheels!
GOD: (laughing) Yea… yea, I like steering wheels, too. But here’s the point, Trav. If you think it’s PAC camp…if you your joy comes from the counselors and dances and the music…then when you leave here….
TRAVIS: I can’t take it with me.
GOD: That’s right. You can’t take it all with you. You’ve got to realize…right now.. that it’s all me.
TRAVIS: (a beat, then smiles, “kidding”) I knew that.
GOD: (laughs) Yea. You’re one smart guy. Look Trav, PAC camp is great. But remember, it’s just a tool. The most important performance this weekend has to be between me and you.
TRAVIS: I like that.
GOD: And what do you before every performance?
TRAVIS: Well…I practice.
GOD: I mean just before you perform.
TRAVIS: Oh. I have somebody pray for me.
GOD: Do that. Do that now, Trav. Look out there and ask somebody to pray for the time you and I are going to spend together today(tonight).
TRAVIS: Right now?
GOD: Why? You too busy?
TRAVIS: No. No, it’s just that… (looks out into the audience and calls on someone) _________, would you pray for me. Pray that …well, that my reason for coming to camp is to grow closer to God? (after the prayer) Thanks.
GOD: Good choice. _________’s one of my favorites.
TRAVIS: You have favorites?
GOD: Yea. About Six billion. Wanna make somethin’ of it?
TRAVIS: (a beat, then) It’s gonna be a good night, Lord.
GOD: Yea. Yea, it is, Trav. And don’t thank the steering wheel. (Travis smiles and leaves)
