Travis and God

PAC III, 3

Travis enters....

TRAVIS: Hey God!

GOD: Hi Trav.

TRAVIS: Boy, hasn’t this been a fantastic camp? Lord, you should have seen…

GOD: …I did.

TRAVIS: But when we were….

GOD: …I was there.

TRAVIS: And the time we…

GOD: Yea. I know.

TRAVIS: (a beat) Oh. I keep forgetting.

GOD: (laughs) That’s okay. You tickle me. So… got any regrets?

TRAVIS: Well…I guess I always have a few. I mean, there were times I could have done better. I’m sorry.

GOD: I forgive you. Just keep talking to me and you’ll be alright.

TRAVIS: And there were so many people this weekend…so many I wanted to talk to but it seems like we were always so busy.

GOD: So what’re you doing now?

TRAVIS: Now? I’m talking to you.

GOD: Want to know who some of my favorites are, Travis?

TRAVIS: About six billion of them?

GOD: Yes, but…there are some, Travis. There are some that really please me. They really make me happy.

TRAVIS: Like…..who?

GOD: My encouragers. My …special agents out there in charge of keeping my love flowing. You clapped for ____________ when he/she performed.

TRAVIS: Yea?

GOD: Did you talk to her/him afterwards? Did you tell them how much you appreciated them simply for who they were? Not just their talent, but for their heart.

TRAVIS: Well…there were so many kids and we had to get on to the next number.

GOD: Weak.

TRAVIS: Huh?

GOD: Pretty weak answer, my man. Trav, I’ve got lots of singers and dancers and actors… What I really need…what my world really needs… are more special people who simply encourage one another….who show my love by encouraging each other. (a beat) So…you busy?

TRAVIS: (takes a moment to catch on, then) Oh. I…uh… I guess not. (Go to audience, pick out specific people, tell them what you appreciate about them…not the performance things, but their personal qualities) (after you’re done) That….you know, that felt pretty good.

GOD: Yea. It’s a boomerang. You can’t encourage someone without being encouraged yourself.

TRAVIS: How do you figure all this out?

GOD: I’m really smart. Go ahead and dance, Travis. And sing and play and perform… but if you really want to help me out…if you really want to please me…just encourage those I love. Can you do that?

TRAVIS: (a beat) I can, Lord. I sure can.

GOD: (a beat) It’s going to be a good night, Travis.

TRAVIS: I can’t wait.

GOD: Then don’t. (Travis exits)
