Travis and God
PAC IV, 2
Travis enters....
TRAVIS: Hey God!
GOD: Hi Trav!
TRAVIS: Uh..Lord, I’ve got this problem. …a question, really.
GOD: It’s always good to talk to you, Trav.
TRAVIS: Well, that’s sorta what I want to talk about. You see, here’s the deal.. How come…And don’t get me wrong.. I love praying to you. … But how come if you always know what’s on my mind…what I need… How come I need to tell you?
GOD: You know Jack Deaver?
TRAVIS: Uh..yea. He’s my Dad.
GOD: I know. What would he say if you called him right now and asked him if he loved you?
TRAVIS: Well…he’d say yes. I mean, he’d wonder why I was asking, but he’d say yes.
GOD: And if you called him and said, “Uh, Dad.. I just wrecked my truck. Wanna buy me a new one?”
TRAVIS: That answer might be different.
GOD: But you’d call him anyway?
TRAVIS: Sure.
GOD: Why? You already know what he’s thinking.
TRAVIS: Well, because he’s my dad.
GOD: Yea. He’s your dad. Sometimes you’ve just got to talk.
TRAVIS: (a beat) I think I get it.
GOD: You ever talk to him just because you want to talk to him…no big problems, not asking anything…just to talk?
TRAVIS: Yea. Sometimes we’ll sit up in a deer stand and there won’t be a deer come by all morning, but we have the best talks.
GOD: You got it. You talk just because you love each other and enjoy each other’s company.
TRAVIS: Yea.
GOD: Put me in the deer stand with you, Travis. I want to be there. I want to talk to you when you’ve got nothing to talk about. When you walk up to the hill tonight, let me walk with you.
TRAVIS: (a beat) When I was little… Okay, when I was young. .. I went to church and the preacher prayed for me…and Mom would pray for me.. and Grandma and everybody.. But I thought maybe I didn’t know the right words.
GOD: Yea. I remember those days. I wondered if you were ever going to speak for yourself.
TRAVIS: This is pretty cool.. I mean the same God who made the entire universe is going to walk to the campfire with me tonight.
GOD: Yea. Pretty cool.
TRAVIS: (a beat) Thanks, Lord. Thanks for just…listening. For forgiving me. For laughing with me….
GOD: And at you…
TRAVIS: And at me… Thanks for just being my friend.
GOD: And for once, you just said what was on MY mind.
TRAVIS: It’s gonna be a great night.
GOD: You have no idea…. (Travis exits)
