Travis and God

PAC IV, 3

Travis enters....seems to be reluctant

GOD: Travis? (Travis doesn’t answer) Hey, Travis.

TRAVIS: Oh… Hi.

GOD: You…uh…hiding from me?

TRAVIS: No. No, I just…I just don’t know what to say.

GOD: That’s not like you.

TRAVIS: I know. Okay, I feel guilty, Lord.

GOD: Guilty?

TRAVIS: It’s the same thing every year. I spend all weekend dancing and singing and doing performances, but I just can’t get it right.

GOD: You’re a pretty good dancer.

TRAVIS: You know what I mean. I’m still thinking about me. Then it comes to the last night of camp and I think, “Oh yea, I’ve got to give the glory to God,” and I come up here at the altar and I confess the same old things all over again. I just can’t get “me” out of my head.

GOD: You’ve got a disease.

TRAVIS: I do?

GOD: Yea…being human. It’s pretty rough at times. Sin didn’t enter the world dressed with horns and a pitchfork… more like a mirror with Travis in the frame.

TRAVIS: But how… I mean, how do I get my mind off myself, Lord? And onto you? I gotta feeling that I’m just never gonna get this right.

GOD: You won’t. Not completely.

TRAVIS: Now that’s depressing.

GOD: Sing me a song.

TRAVIS: Huh?

GOD: One my favorites… we sang it _____________. Grace like Rain. Go ahead. Humor me. Besides, I like your voice.

TRAVIS: (a beat, then..slowly and thoughtfully) Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I'm found
Was blind but now I see so clearly

Hallelujah, grace like rain falls down on me
Hallelujah, all my stains are washed away, washed away

GOD: You forgot something.

TRAVIS: Huh?

GOD: The verse about being perfect.

TRAVIS: (thinks a moment, then) There isn’t any verse about being perfect. (a long beat, lets it sink in, then finally) Oh.

GOD: Grace, Trav. Grace. The greatest gift I’ve ever given you. Grace means I understand you.. I forgive you… and my Son has already paid the price. All you’ve got to do is…

TRAVIS: …receive it.

GOD: And if you really want to focus on me, look out there. When you focus on the people in those seats, you’ll see my face. Start right now… pray for somebody.

TRAVIS: (goes to the audience, take a hand, pray for that person, then another, then) Thanks, Lord. That grace is…. Amazing.

GOD: (chuckles) You ought to be a songwriter.

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) Meet me at the altar tonight?

GOD: I’ll beat you there. (Travis smiles and leaves)
