Travis and God 2004 IV-2

TRAVIS: It’s been a great weekend, Lord.

GOD: One of the best, Trav. Did you see that_________? Travis, when something like that happens, you may think it’s loud down there. Up here there are ten thousand angels cheering.

TRAVIS: So how can I take it with me, Lord. I’m so darned tired of coming to camp then in a few days I’m right back to my old self. (a beat) Hey, I’ve got a question I’ve always wanted to ask you. Have you got a minute?

GOD: A minute? I’ve got eternity.

TRAVIS: I’m always saying stupid things to you.

GOD: And that’s what I love about you.

TRAVIS: Which one’s….you know…which one’s real?

GOD: Uh….like….

TRAVIS: I mean, when I’m at camp, everybody’s showing your love and we’re all happy, then I get home and go back to my old ways and …I don’t know…I just want to know which one’s real?

GOD: Do I ever lie to you, Travis?

TRAVIS: No way.

GOD: You’re right. Never. What you’re feeling this weekend… this is the real you. It’s the most real you’ve ever been…oh, you’ve got a ways to go, but you get home and you start putting on an act because you’re afraid to be yourself. (a beat) Notice how everybody loves you this weekend?

TRAVIS: Yea. I can feel it.

GOD: That’s because you’re being yourself…at least you’re coming closer.

TRAVIS: So that stuff when I get home….?

GOD: It’s a lie, Travis. Like in Steak and Shake last week? Those girls from Jacksonville came in and you became the stud.

TRAVIS: (a beat) This is really embarrassing.

GOD: You’re not a stud, Travis. You’re a loving young man who just puts on an act. Remember when ________ said she hoped you sang tonight because you had such a cool voice? Your head got so big you had to take your hat off.

TRAVIS: Boy, you remember everything, don’t you?

GOD: At least the funny stuff. Lots of people can sing, Travis. What’d you say to her?

TRAVIS: Uh…(embarrassed) I told her that I’d see about it. I was …you know..cool.

GOD: But what you meant was…..come on, Travis, what did you really mean?

TRAVIS: (a beat) I meant that really made me feel great to have somebody tell me I had a nice voice.

GOD: And it made you feel…?

TRAVIS: (a beat) Important.

GOD: That’s real, Travis. Now you’re being real. I’ve heard some things in small groups this weekend…and at the campfire….people are being real. ..and you know what? The more honest they are, the more they’re loved.

TRAVIS: That’s real, Lord.

GOD: That’s real. Now…which is the real Travis? Mr. Stud of Shake…or the boy who’s standing in front of me right now, just wanting people to love him?

TRAVIS: I see your point, Lord. I just hope I’ve got nerve to …to be me. The one you made.

GOD: You can do it. It just takes getting used to. You’re my man, Trav. You’re my hands and feet and …mouth..to tell people how much I love them. Wanna practice?

TRAVIS: Here? Everybody’s watching.

GOD: Duh. That’s the point, friend. Pick somebody out. Talk to them…talk to them like it’s me talking.

TRAVIS: (go to the audience…pick out a camper or staff member…look them in the eye and tell them why you love them….then go to another…then a third) (when you’re done) This..uh…this works pretty good, Lord.

GOD: Yea. It’s sort of the point of being alive.

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) It’s been good talking to you, Lord. Any last words of advice?

GOD: Yea. Get real.

TRAVIS: (smiles, then) Cool. (exit)
