Travis and God

PAC II, 1

Travis enters....

TRAVIS: Hey God!

GOD: Hey Travis!

TRAVIS: I’m back!

GOD: Yep. Saw you come in.

TRAVIS: Man, this feels good… it even smells good! I can’t wait to meet a bunch of new people. I mean, just look at all of ‘em! Pretty cool bunch.

GOD: Thanks. They’re some of my best work. So how’s Travis doing?

TRAVIS: You kiddin’? I’m at PAC camp! I’m doin’ great!

GOD: You’re perfect?

TRAVIS: Well, not exactly. I’m still pretty shy and the beginning of camp always scares me a little bit.

GOD: Scares you?

TRAVIS: I don’t mean you… It’s…. you know.. meeting all the new people. Like that guy back there. I saw him walk in this morning. He looks like he’s really got his act together. He even walks cool.

GOD: Interesting.

TRAVIS: And this girl up here. I remember her from last year. Man, she was awesome. She could dance and sing and act and….

GOD: That’s bad?

TRAVIS: Well, no. But it’s a performing arts camp, Lord. And I’m always afraid that I won’t be as good as everyone else. Like that guy over there. Man, he’s built! And all the other kids were hanging around him when he came this morning…

GOD: Travis….

TRAVIS: And then there’s those other…

GOD: Travis. Could interrupt you a minute?

TRAVIS: Sorry. I keep forgetting. When I talk to you I need to listen a little too.

GOD: Got any dust?

TRAVIS: What?

GOD: Dust? See any dust or dirt anywhere?

TRAVIS: You kidding? We’ve cleaned this place top to bottom.

GOD: Look on the bottom of _________’s shoe. (a kid in the front row) Put a little dust on your finger.

TRAVIS: This is weird. (but you do it…apologize to the kid if you like).. Okay. Now what?

GOD: Rub a little on your eyes/

TRAVIS: Is this a joke?

GOD: Do I joke?

TRAVIS: Oh. (you rub a little dust onto your eyelids then blink a little) Wow. What happened?

GOD: Look different?

TRAVIS: Oh my gosh!

GOD: You’re looking at people with my eyes now. Look at the kid in the back..the one who’s “got it all together.”

TRAVIS: He’s… he’s nervous, too. I can see his heart! He’s just like me!

GOD: And the girl with all the talent?

TRAVIS: (looking at her) Wow. She tries so hard because she’s afraid people won’t like her otherwise. I can’t believe it.

GOD: And Mr. Buff back there?

TRAVIS: (looking) He’s…he’s just a little kid on the inside. He’s afraid to perform because people might find out what he’s like. Lord…this is really cool…but…But I don’t think I can take all this…

GOD: Blink.

TRAVIS: Do what?

GOD: Blink your eyes. (Travis blinks) There… back to being Travis. So..whatta you think?

TRAVIS: I think everybody’s …well…everybody’s just like me on the inside.

GOD: If you look at them through my eyes. And if they’re like you, what do they want?

TRAVIS: I guess they just want someone to love them for who they are.

GOD: Trav, it always takes awhile, but you catch on.

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) It’s good to be back, Lord.

GOD: Yea. Yea, it sure is. (Travis exits)
