Travis and God, I, 1.
2003
Travis: (enters, nervously.. looks around…homesick…finally) I wanna go home.
God: Why?
Travis: Who’s that?
God: Me.
Travis: Me who?
God: The Big Me. Capital M, little E.
Travis: I don’t see anybody.
God: That’s strange. I’m everywhere.
Travis: (turning around quickly) What? How’d you know my name?
God: I gave it to you.
Travis: Dad? I thought you left.
God: Dad? Well, in a way. I’m God, Travis.
Travis: You’re kidding!
God: I don’t kid. Well, maybe when I made Pete, but that was a weird day. I was experimenting.
Travis: Sorry.
God: No problem. So why do you want to go home? You just got here this morning.
Travis: I’m homesick, God. I don’t hardly know anybody. I couldn’t even sleep last night because I was so worried.
God: Happens a lot. So who’ve you loved?
Travis: What?
God: You said you were homesick. You get that way when you’re away from the people you love. Who’ve you loved?
Travis: Loved? I just got here.
God: You have ..uh..some sort of time limit on love? You can’t expect to stand around to yourself all weekend, Travis, and have people get to know you. Pick one out.
Travis: Huh?
God: Somebody up front. Pick somebody out.
Travis: This is embarrassing.
God: (laugh) I know. But it won’t kill you. Got one?
Travis: (going over to a camper) Uh..yea. How about him/her?
God: Good choice. One of my favorites. Ask his/her name.
Travis: (to the camper) What’s your name? (they give their name) His/her name’s _________, Lord.
God: You think I don’t know that? Give him/her a hug. Tell ‘em you love ‘em.
Travis: What if he/she won’t love me back?
God: You do your job, I’ll do mine. (he hugs the camper & says he loves them)
Travis: She/he didn’t run away. You know, I could get to like this.
God: I said to love people, Trav. Not be loved. You do the first part, I’ll do the rest. You ready for camp? (Trav waits a beat, thumbs up, runs off)
