Travis and God, III, 1.

TRAVIS: (running in) Yo! God!

God: Yo God? What is, a volleyball game?

TRAVIS: Oh. Sorry.. It’s just so great to be back at camp again, Lord!

God: I’ve missed you, Trav.

TRAVIS: I sort have my…you know… dry spells, don’t I?

God: That’s..uh…that’s one way to put it.

TRAVIS: But it’s gonna be different this year.

God: Really? How?

TRAVIS: Uh..gosh.. I don’t know. It’s usually me askin’ the questions.

God: I know. My turn. How’s camp gonna be different this year, Travis?

TRAVIS: Well… let’s see.. I know more people.

God: That’s good. Nothing wrong with that.

TRAVIS: And I’m older.

God: Older doesn’t always mean smarter. Just look at those guys on the back row. . . . . Okay, I’m kidding. But how are YOU going to be different this year?

TRAVIS: Well…..(a long pause) … you wanna help me out here, Lord? As usual, I don’t have the answers.

God: And as usual, I do. That’s how I got the job. Look at those people out there, Trav. Who do you see?

TRAVIS: Well..there’s.. (name a bunch of them)…

God: Yea. All good friends of mine. What’re they doing?

TRAVIS: Right now?

God: Right now.

TRAVIS: They’re staring at me.

God: I know. How does that make you feel?

TRAVIS: Well..sort of good …and uncomfortable at the same time.

God: That’s why you came to camp, Travis. That’s how it can be different this year. Sort of good…. And uncomfortable at the same time. Walk a little closer.

TRAVIS: (walks closer to the crowd..don’t stare directly at someone but make it look like you are)

God: Look into the faces. See that girl? She’s had her feelings hurt a lot this year. She almost didn’t come to camp because she thinks people are always watching her and judging her. See that guy? (Travis moves to look at someone else.) He feels like he’s a fake. He’s one person when he’s around home and another when he’s with his friends and something completely different at camp. He’s afraid to let people know what he’s really like …maybe they wouldn’t like him. And see that guy over there? (Travis moves again.) He’s a big guy but inside there’s a little boy who sometimes wants to cry and sometimes wants to run and laugh and act stupid like a kid. He’s having trouble putting all this together.

TRAVIS: (a long beat, then) You know a lot, Lord.

God: That’s the first step in loving somebody, Trav. You’ve got to get to know them. ………. Now you know why you came to camp?

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) Them?

God: You got it. You’re my man this weekend. When you talk to my kids, be Me.

TRAVIS: (a beat then) I can do that, Lord.

God: Well, Yo Trav!

TRAVIS: (a beat, then) Yo God! (he runs off)
