Travis and God, PAC IV, 3
TRAVIS: Lord? … sometimes I dread this part of camp.
GOD: Why’s that?
TRAVIS: The leaving. I never want to go.
GOD: That’s good. Wouldn’t it be terrible to go to a camp you wanted to leave?
TRAVIS: I guess so. But it’s so easy here…there are so many people who feel like I do.. then I go home and…I know… sometimes I feel like I’m all alone.
GOD: We’ve had so many good talks, Travis… so many. But there’s one thing you’ve never asked from me…
TRAVIS: I can’t imagine what that’d be. It seems like I’m always asking you for something.
GOD: And I like that. Can you imagine..can you imagine having a little daughter who badly needed help with something, but she was afraid to take your hand and ask you?
TRAVIS: Yeah..I guess so. So what haven’t I asked from you?
GOD: Fellowship. People to be with…after you leave camp. Someone to pray with you.. someone to just be with you and listen.
TRAVIS: (a beat then) I guess …I guess I’ve never prayed for that.
GOD: It’s simple… “Lord don't let me be lonely.” And you know what I like about that prayer? It does the same thing for the others I send your way. They feel lonely too. Oh Travis, it’s wonderful…I’m telling you it’s the best.. We’ve talked about Maria dancing.. (Maria begins to dance) … how her dance is like a prayer…how when she focuses on me, she forgets about herself.
TRAVIS: That’s beautiful, Lord…
GOD: But the part you haven’t seen… the most beautiful part is when she asks someone to join her.. (she simply gestures for Jess, and Jess stands to begin dancing with Maria) Watch what happens… Jessica’s joy becomes Maria’s……… They give each other strength to dance…They give each other a reason to move… They feed of each other’s spirit, Travis… They become one….as I am one….. And here’s the really cool part…they begin….to attract…..others (Laura and Hannah rise to join in the dance) … and look what’s happened to the dance, Travis… look what’s happened to the prayer…. They’re each dancing their own dance…but they’re all dancing to the same music… each dancer’s energy blends with the others…it encourages the others… It’s like they’re holding each other up…Just like a circle of fellowship…a community of people praying together..
TRAVIS: (watching them) That’s how I want to feel…that’s how I want to be when I’m praying, Lord…
GOD: Ask me for it, Travis…there’s nothing I’d rather give you right now…
TRAVIS: (as the girls dance…Travis prays his own prayer to find a group of friends to pray and be with) (a beat, then) Lord, this is gonna be one of the best things you’ve ever given me…
GOD: … a favor?
TRAVIS: Sure. Anything, Lord.
GOD: Invite me to join your dance…. (The four girls form a circle, including Travis…circling once then the girls dance off, leaving Travis alone… he exits)
