David, You & I

2007 · Jacksonville Theatre Guild

A Jacksonville Theatre Guild production directed by Ken Bradbury, David, You & I retells the life of the biblical King David — from shepherd boy and giant-killer to king — through Ken's signature mix of music, comedy, and big-cast spectacle. True to form, Bradbury frames the ancient story with playful anachronism: a gossip-columnist Walter Winchell narrates the rise and fall of the house of Saul, a Cuban nightclub fills with salsa dancers, and gangster "hoods" prowl among the soldiers, ballet dancers, and singing sheep. The show pairs a Young David (and Paperboy) with an Older David who looks back across his reign, weaving together Goliath, Jonathan, Bathsheba, Absalom, and Solomon into one sweeping, swinging pageant.
