07 Judge Booklet Suggestions
Page 3: no mention of lunch breaks. We might mention that it’s a good idea to schedule all of the lunch breaks at once to avoid unnecessary noise in the hallways.
Page 3: scheduling tips. I guess that some coaches really like this, but I’ve always thought it a lousy idea to schedule schools in blocks. ..for example, near-by schools first and other schools later. This causes a couple of disadvantages: one of the learning experiences of contest should be that of hearing kids from other schools. If a school begins at 9 and ends at 11, they’re gone. I mean after all, why not just ship the judges to the school and save all the bus fuel if they’re only going to get to hear their own school perform? Judges end up hearing student after student from the same school… not a good way to judge. Don’t change this because of me. It’s probably something we should take up with the committee. (But I do like the idea of the “scheduling tips” section. Good idea.)
General comments: Maybe I can’t find it, but we need to tell the host that judges should write down the time for each performance, but THE ACTUAL TIME PENALITIES WILL ALL BE ASSIGNED IN THE OFFICE. This cuts down on mistakes since only one person in the building needs to know the penalties. Each judge should rate the contestant as if she or he has fulfilled the required time limits.
