2009 Speech Workshop Schedule
“Build It and They Will Come” Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 Take Me Out to the Speech Game!
8:45- 9:00 am- Put on your uniform and sharpen your cleats at the door as we register you for the World Series of IESA Speech, 2009!
9:00- 9:15 am- The Opening Pitch. Team Manager Nicole gives us a preview of the upcoming season with special emphasis on getting your team signed up for the Series.
9:15- 9:30 am- Pre-Game Warm-up provided by your talented but mostly audacious state advisory committee. (Save your boo-ing for the umpire)
9:30- 9:35 am- Fast break to your own person dugout.
9:35- 10:35 am- Session I This one’s for the new coaches in the speech league as Mary Nelson instructs the team members about how to survive their rookie season. The old ghost of the clubhouse, Bob Crowe, leads us in a hit-filled workshop on writing scripts for your players, making sure that they’re on base for competition. Another survivor of the Old-timers’ Game, Ken Bradbury, will be let out of the home long enough to lead you in a group of sure-fire speech calisthenics designed to warm up your team’s acting muscles.
10:35- 10:40 am- Dugout time! Hurry or your beer will get warm!
10:40- 12:00- The Players Hit the Field! Our scouts have roamed the speech diamonds of Illinois and proudly present to you the students of St. Joseph, Mt. Olive, Odell St. Paul, and Lewiston, courtesy of coaches Jeffers, Huls, Smith, Hart, Doran & Lafary.
Diamond I: Busch Stadium. Coaches Lora Smith and Noma Simpson concentrate on singles and doubles with their student presentations. Diamond II: Wrigley Field. Julie Nelson and Ken Bradbury host a fine team of upcoming stars in duets and small groups.
Diamond III: Shea Stadium is home to a sampling of small group, duets, and chorale presentation with coaches Weber & Kracht on deck to keep the fans in line.
12:00- 1:00- Lunch- “Off the Grill” We meet to eat and digest the previous innings’ entertainment. Please sit in the dugout containing your area coaches.
1:00- 2:00 pm- Session II Hitting a homerun on your first at bat as Lora Smith explains the fast balls and sliders of organizing a speech team. Bradbury will be awakened once again to repeat his team warm-ups from the morning session. Using your players to the Max. Chris Cons and Cheri Semelroth strut their stuff around the mound explaining the team activities of Small Groups and Chorale Presentations.
2:00- 2:05- 7th-Inning Stretch! (We’ll time your dash to the dugout.)
2:05- 3:05- The Final Inning! Making those runs count! That denizen of the diamond, Trish Ballard, instructs coaches new and ..uh..not-new in how to be a cheerleader for your program while Coach Janet Kracht shows you a neat new pitch on tying your speech program to your state goals. Getting the Ball Rolling…for new and experienced coaches. Team managers Lora Smith and Julie Nelson will concentrate on the finer points of getting your team up and on its feet for a winning season.
