2010 Speech Workshop Schedule
“Be True to your School” Friday, Sept. 17, 2010
8:45- 9:00 am- Show Your Colors as you register for the latest installment of the IESA Speech Workshop. We encourage everyone to dress for the occasion, proudly wearing your school colors!
9:00- 9:15 am- Okay kids, let me have your attention. Headmaster Nicole will set the tone for where we’re going. (Don’t worry. She doesn’t teach to the test.)
9:15- 9:30 am- Opening Assembly. God only knows that’s going to happen here. We’ve released several of our problem delinquents from detention to give you a taste of the day.
9:30- 9:35 am- Recess! Hurry! Restroom monitors may be present to prevent dawdling.
9:35- 10:35 am- Period I Be Present at “The Creation!” – Yes, we may be out of our minds, but we want to run a new event by you to gauge your reaction. Julie Nelson and Ken Bradbury will “demo” a possible new event: Group Improv. The Hostess with the Mostest, Starla Yelm, leads you gently down the primrose path of contest hosting. Valium optional. Let’s Get it Together, Guys! Two veterans of the Chorale Presentation Circuit, Chris Coons, and Mary Nelson, will show you how to herd cats and prod them to contest.
10:35- 10:40 am- Break
10:40- 12:00- They’re back!!!!!!!! Just when you thought you’d escaped the classroom for the day, we’re bringing some of the best and brightest to you with student presentations from around the state. We’ll take a few moments after each presentation to evaluate what we’ve seen.

Room III: Moderator- Starla Yelm and Dru Heggen; Door Monitor- Claudia Julie Nelson- Small Group Improv
12:00- 1:00- Food Fight! Well…perhaps we’re getting a bit old for that, but we’ll meet in our contest areas to munch a lunch hot off the grill.
1:00- 2:00 pm- Period II Say Stranger, You New Around These Parts? - Megan Pearson takes the newbies on a whirlwind tour of the strangest job you ever accepted, coaching speech. Oh Heck, Just Make it Up! Starla Yelm & ________ drag you through the magical wringers of Impromptu and Storytelling. A Truly Moving Experience. Speech Coach Tim “Wonder Boy” Chipman shows you the in’s, out’s, right’s, and left’s of blocking your contest events. Your fondest fantasies will be fulfilled as Tim show’s you how to tell them where to go.
2:00- 2:05- Quick Break! (Don’t leave now! The parking lot is mined!)
2:05- 3:05- Period III Okay, Let’s get it Right This Time - Julie Nelson and Ken Bradbury rarely get along well and chances are they completely blew their morning session, so here’s for a second chance. Move Me Again, Baby! Tim-Tim the movement man repeats his blocking session in hopes of getting it right this time.
