2011 Speech Workshop Schedule

“Dr. Seuss” Friday, Sept. 16, 2011

Oh, the places you’ll go, Dr. Seuss! The people you’ll meet on the way! The knowledge and fun! The season’s begun in speech at IESA! A splederful treat today as we meet, on a day that’s not boring or formal. We’re gathering ‘round in Bloomington town (Don’t be confused, it’s not Normal).

At 8:45 we’ll gather you, take your names and see your sweet faces. Then at 9 o’clock sharp, Nicole hits her mark, and our day is off to the races!

9:30- 9:35 am And in case on your hop you had no chance to stop, we’ll take a wee break at 9:30, For Pepsi or tea, or maybe a …well…but in case there’s a line, better hurry.

9:35- 10:35 am- The First Meeting offers three wonderful things to entice you into our sessions. Impromptu, New Coaches, and Hosting A Fling for sending your out on your mission. The Who of all Whoville, Steve Williams of Chatham, will expound upon Impromptu Speaking, While Timothy Chipman of Jacksonville town will take all New Coaches who’re breathing. And taking the helm will be sweet Starla Yelm as she guides you through gales brisk and breezy. She’ll steer you through storms of speech entry forms and make Hosting Contests look easy!

10:35- 10:40 am- A break! A break! It’s time for a break! Come all ye fair rogues, knaves and wenches! For even a speech coach needs a small stretch! (Who think ye we are, the Grinches?)

10:40- 12:00- And now for a treat! Get ready to meet the students from all ‘round the land, Who’ve taken a day from their schoolwork to play their parts (no green eggs and ham.) Just pick out a room….We’ll bring them to you….A wondrous, ponderous treat. We’ll shuffle them in and the real fun begins..of glorious IESA speech!

(Nicole..I assume you don’t need the following in the actual program?)

Room I: Moderator- Steve Williams and Noma Simpson; Door Monitor- Nicole Duet- Ashland AC Central Improv

Room II: Moderator- Starla Yelm and Dru; Door Monitor- Sheri Poetry Small Group- Dru Heggen

Room III: Moderator- Ken and Chris ; Door Monitor- Claudia Storytelling- Lewistown Central

12:00- 1:00 Sam I Am had his eggs and his ham if he pleased …so eat…We won’t tell your employer. Let’s all break our fast with a tasty repast ….you’ll find it out in the foyer. Please sit by the plates from your part of the state to plan out your area’s rules. Kick back and relax and forget the attacks you’d be suffering from food at your school.

1:00- 2:00 pm- Time to get up once you’ve had enough and head to the afternoon’s poaching. A tasty dessert of tips, tricks, and mixes of darned good advice for your coaching.

 ”It’s not just at bed, “Ken Bradbury said, “that the world needs good Storytelling.” “It’s fun and fast and it’s really a blast! It’s Remarckable!” (Pardon the spelling.) Trish is back on the track with her hat full of cats as she takes a magical tour And quickly reviews IESA Events in a magical Ballard-ish whirl! Thidwick was big-hearted, that we all know, but his team was a terrible mess. The star-studded duo of Heggen & Yelm will teach Organizational Bliss!

2:00- 2:05- To quote that famed pachyderm, Horton, of who it was said wet his trunk in hall. “A break is a break and we even wee breaks are breaks no matter how small.”

2:05- 3:05- The Climax! The Apex! The Final Event! The Ultimate Thrill of the day! The great final session on our workshop day mission presents two options to play: The Lorax of Chatham, Steve Williams by name, holds forth on the fine art of Blocking! He’ll show you the where’s and the why’s and the who’s of movement to stick in your stocking. Yertle the Turtle could never Improv so he ended up dead in the road. Ken Bradbury brings a bag-full of games lighten your speech coaching load.

We know Seuss would smile if he’d stay here a while and see what your program has meant To the children who’ve come, stayed awhile, then moved on, and knew that their time was well-spent. The days that you spend, the hours on end, frustrations and triumphs and tears… Are worth it, my friend, for at the day’s end, you’ve done something lasting for years. The sound of a laugh, the warmth of a hug, those things will stay with you a while For we hope that you see (and Seuss would agree) you’ve brightened the heart of child.
