Agenda 1-9-06

Present: Ken, Linda, Roberta, Tony, Trish, Tim, Carole, Margie, Kim Not Present: Shelley

Hosting Rotations- Require a host rotation for every area- this requirement will be effective for the 2006 contest season. In the directions, encourage schools to consider hosting two years in a row. Please mention that there is a concern eligibility requirement- requiring a grade check and the implications to the participants/activity. Judge Mailing: We are in somewhat of a crisis. Consolidate and highlight pertinent information. Add to the host instructions: Contact the host from the previous year for suggestions for the possible judges. Add to the judge list the numerical ratings for the judges. List on the website when the mailings are sent out. Talk to Craig to see if we can get the name and email for the coaches out on the web. This will be available to all schools from their entry page. Super State: Discussion only. No movement on the issue. Encourage coaches to host a recital or parent’s night for an additional contest. Cards: Increase the size of the print on the labels. See if we can put something on the registration information regarding a “student with special needs”. The coach should then contact the host school with specifics. Add the judge material to the initial mailing to each school. Spotlight on the Arts ideas Link to schools speech page, photos, tips for new coaches, information for parents, reinforce the goals of the speech program and the benefits of the activity. Speech newsmakers- send in or send us a link on your team in the local news and we will post this information. Spotlight retiring coaches- send us your write-up and we will post. Do something like the “open dates” for speeches- I am looking for a script… put the contact information. Don’t be one of these judges… add this page to the judge material Don’t give comments that do not support the rating given. Give both positive and negative comments. Don’t judge the piece. Judge the performance of the student. Long introductions are not necessary and put the contest behind. Don’t be late. Don’t make decisions if you are unsure. Find the Judge Representative. Don’t assume things are the same from year to year. Read the materials that are sent. Don’t be inflexible. Nicole…as we were discussing the whole “don’t be this type of judge”, I thought we should word it differently. I would recommend: The Top Complaints about Judges: 1. A judge who gives comments that do not support the rating. 2. A judge that judges the material rather than the performance of the contestant…. {Etc. This makes it a bit clearer that we actually do receive these complaints and not that it’s simply a list of our pet peeves.} No changes to the financial report. Changes to entries: no changes to the current entry policy. Ask Craig to make each roster available to the contest host. Individual Events: (new event and new titles) Solo Acting: presentation, monologue, or storytelling [A dramatic presentation by an individual student. This may be a monologue, a selection in which two or more characters are portrayed, or storytelling.] Impromptu Original Script Poetry Points of Emphasis for 2006-07 Intros Individual Events Hosting Rotations Participant Entries Audience Protocol- make this a suggestion, put something in the host material and maybe something in the initial mailing. Please do not enter performance rooms when a performance is in progress. This is a huge distraction to the performers. Please turn off your cell phones. This can be very distracting to the performers. Please do not take flash photography. This is very distracting to the students. Make sure you arrive at contest early enough to inspect the performance areas. Have your students inspect their contest areas. If they should have any questions regarding the set-up, have them contact you. Remind contest hosts that they should make their performance areas as performer friendly as possible. Please remove all of the possible trouble spots.
