May, 2000 Mothers Day

From Proverbs 31 A wife of noble character, who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. She is clothed with strength and dignity; She can laugh at the days to come. She speaks with wisdom and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised! Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

This Present Darkness.. Demons.. can’t take over town . . one woman praying…

My great-grandma’s diary.. “rose early this morning, gathered eggs and milked, brought in the horses from the pasture, scrubbed the upstairs floors then woke the men for breakfast.” And she prayed.. Nearly every morning’s entry started with “This is just about the finest day ever!”

“Still on shock over Claude (their son.. been killed in a buggy wreck the day before).. but the sun shone bright this morning.. just about the finest day ever.”

I read a book in a college religion course.. Women are almost invisible in the Bible. Throughout the Christian tradition, most women have been relegated to praying. Relegated to praying? Like saying a King was relegated to just ruling the world. I know so many Praying women… Marge.. on her calendar, every February… start praying for the play Brenda . .. emails me daily .. asking for who needs prayer in our school so she can spread the word… Mothers in Touch.. every Thursday morning.. Karol in hallways… Each teacher assigned…

“We can’t take over this town. There’s still one woman praying.” Billy Graham… Barbara Walters… two ladies in motel

When I do a play, it takes a technical crew of about 15 good people.. 2 costume ladies I’ve worked with for years.. 1 light man whom I’ve depended upon for 25 years… They can all be replaced. I can be replaced. The only irreplaceable people are the prayer warriors… I have this theory… One day God found that sometimes mothers are just worked too hard to get all His work done so He made the Superwoman.. and He gave her the name “Grandma.”

This time would probably be better spent if you would simply stand and tell the stories of faith about your mothers and grandmothers… I’d love to just sit and hear them. On LWM and camp: I ask the question.. Heaven.. two lines of people.. In the line of those who are responsible for your getting there, Mother and Grandmother have shown up every time.. in hundreds of sessions…

Fathers pray.. Grandfathers and Uncles pray.. but there’s something very special about a praying Grandmother…

Chicken Soup for the Soul… the story of Kenny
