Beardstown Scholars Banquet

Bummy.

Can’t think of a better place to be tonight than with you people. You’ve worked very hard to get what you have. This meal is just a little part of what you deserve.

Parents poll: Who got a call today from the Bulls to replace Dennis Rodman? Who was offered a contract to play for the Bears? Who was given money today because you drove a nice car?

Who used something they learned in school?

The Illinoian Star has a sports page but no scholars page. It’s a funny world.

You already have something very important. I want to talk to you tonight about what to do with it.

Knowledge is like a bunch of bananas. They’re good, but if you put them away in a drawer and don't use them, they’ll just stink and draw flies.

How are you going to use what you have? A few tips:

  1. Get your mind off yourself and help somebody else.

God has given you gifts and talents. Their wasted if you keep them to yourself. Becky Easley...funerals.

Mr Rogers

  1. Loosen up. Anyone who makes the grades you make, has pressure on them. Ease up. Take a break. Jeff W....free spirit...robbed Walmart Singer Church lady Roger Ebert....

Don’t take yourself too seriously. If you’ll look around, you’ll notice that no one else is.

Go barefoot more often eat nothing but ice cream for an entire day tomorrow: wear underwear backwards Mc Donnalds...”Have a Nice Day!:” Why? Biggest grouch in your school “I just want you to know that I feel great!”

Loosen up. I teach teenagers. A very serious bunch. Always posing. Always concerned about how they’re looking.

You can’t use your gifts if you’re always thinking about yourself.

Want to know your parents anxieties? Look in Mom’s purse. Dad’s billfold. Me: draft card. Comb.

  1. Constantly ask yourself...Who am I trying to please? Teachers? Mom and Dad? Myself? My friends?

Hiney the Mule.

  1. Out of everything in your life, put people first.

Old lady...salt and pepper shakers.

Me: runt puppy.

Every day you see people who are hurting, who need help. Who could use a hug, a pat on the back, a compliment. Get to know them...in this crowd tonight...people with a lot in common... Poll: Who........Used to take one large step into bed Covered up all but a breathing hole. Has ever faked being sick Would be embarrassed if we knew what underwear your wore tonight?

You’ve been given wonderful gifts... Intelligence, a good school, people who love you. Being smart and working hard is just the first step. It’s what you do with it that makes a difference to me....

I don’t get your grade card...but I know people who you can help. I have no idea what you got on your last math test, but I know people in Beardstown who are hurting .... You may have made straight A’s...now... take a walk through ST. Luke’s and put your gifts to work.... You may be on the honor roll...NOW... bring real honor to yourself by sticking up for the kid in class who everyone makes fun of.

When you go to bed at night, count the number of people you’ve made happy. The money you earn will rot away. Your new car will rust. The house you live in now will be gone some day. But the people you help, the people you make happy, the people who’s lives you change by making them better...That will last forever.

Congratulations...NOW... Get to work! The world needs you!
