Big Bro-Sis

Nov 2001 Bummy…diaper…

My first year, I learned not to sit on the front row.

I’ve learned a lot from children…

Be ready for surprises… Matt, baritone

How things appear may not be how they are: Last week… Josh, ice cream bar, library

We learn how to be honest. Athletic director’s computer: “Dear Mr. Stephens, I’m sorry for calling you a dumb jerk. You really aren’t that dumb.”

There are times to take kids seriously. Sorry about the tastelessness of this story. Vomit marathon.

We learn how to give. Dad, Doug, clown at camp.

I wonder if you little brothers and sisters have any idea how much your big brother and big sister have learned from you.

Christmas is coming..a month of commercials and candy and spending too much money on silly things. The best things you do in the next month are the things you’re going to do for other people. (repeat) And most of them won’t cost a cent. And the really cool part is what it’ll do for you. The Story of Kenny.

Let me give you a few suggestions:

Build a snowman in someone’s yard who can’t build a snowman any more. Send a love letter to someone then don’t sign it. Let them think the whole world sent it. Simply tell someone...”I’ve waited all year to say this, but I really appreciate you.” It’ll be remembered long after their Nintendo or their designer scarf has worn out Take a cookie to someone ringing the Salvation Army’s bell.

Give more gifts without letting anyone know who did it. The best gift: when the giver is unknown. Lockers at school for Mary. Goon Squad.

And every time you do this, you’ll be teaching a lesson… a lesson of love and caring. We learn so much from each other. I hope that all you little brothers and sisters know what a wonderful gift you’re giving your big brother or big sister just by being you. The simple joy of watching you grow up.

Now..since I can’t go through each one of your lives and tell you why your gifts are so special, I’ll present a little play about growing up.. With the help of two young actors:

Cody and Melissa
