Beginning a speech: Bummy
There are two ways to give somebody a message. . . • Lecture them • Tell them stories. . .and that’s what I’m going to do today.
Today I’ll tell you some stories about leadership and taking charge…and you’ll help me tell some stories.
So I was thinking…pretending I was an 8th-grader….somebody picked me to attend this leadership conference… not sure what it is…got on a bus and traveled to Rochester. . . .Swing choir performed…pretty good, but I still don’t know what’s going on…then they introduce this old bald guy….. And I think to myself… Am I going to listen to a boring speech? … or would I rather just hear him tell stories? Which choice would you make?
So I’m going to tell you a few stories… true stories about real people…about leaders. . . about people like you sometimes.
A story about a leader …mother died when she was 5, a very strict father who didn’t speak to her… Women shouldn’t be educated, so she got an education. Women couldn’t vote…she started the movement to get them the right.. Slavery controlled the South…she fought to have the slaves freed. But where did this start? Teenager… Civil War. Julia Ward Howe. Battle Hymn….
Young boy born in Russia…mud floors in his house. Age 5: watched his house burn…Jewish family, Tsar. Smuggled to New York…sold newspapers… 5 cents a week…gave to his mother. Sold papers in taverns…heard the music…taught himself…black keys He became a leader of our nation …..inspiring us with his music God Bless America… immigrant…Irving Berlin
Boy from Illinois. . .growing up his Mom noticed that he had a really tender heart for other people when they were sad. Became a tremendous athlete..made all-state in Illinois as a football player, in basketball he won the area slam-dunk championship, his high school’s best pitcher so…recruited to play baseball in college.. But he liked theatre.. . went to college on a theatre scholarship….writes music and his first musical will be coming out this winter. . . But the cool thing. . .he has a huge heart for those who aren’t so fortunate… His cousin… a child with Down Syndrome…his best buddy. Would take his hand every morning and walk him to the bus stop, then ride to school with him. In college he joined a program where he buddied up with another boy with learning problems… When he was a senior in high school he was the one who spoke to the freshmen in the hallways and made them feel special. He doesn’t say, “I’m a leader! Follow me!” . . .he just sets an example and people want to be like him. And he’s here today. .John Love
Robert E. Lee …John Stauffer. Robert E. Lee, Natchez.
A lady who was a slave..named Araminta…Her owner came to their house one day to sell off her brother. Mother hid him. Said, “Whoever tries to take my son, I will split his head open.” Became a “house girl,” in charge of the baby. Whenever the baby cried she was whipped. She said, “One day I was whipped five times before breakfast.” Once asked to help catch a runaway slave…she refused..Master threw a two-pound piece of metal at her…cracked her head open…seizures the rest of her life. Became a conductor on the Underground Railroad. Married a man named Tubman and changed her name to Harriet. Harriet Tubman. Ripley Ohio. Swing Low … Trail of Tears….One lady…no one knows her name…began singing this song…. Amazing Grace

Let’s have a little fun… You help me write the rest of this speech. One of the best qualities of a leader. . he or she isn’t afraid to loosen up and act a little silly. Intro, John, Hope, Nate.

A final word… Leadership doesn’t just meaning being elected president of some club at school or being chosen for a team. Monday when you return to your school and you see that boy who always eats by himself at lunch… It’s a leader who’ll sit beside him. That girl who gets left out of everything and hangs around her locker every morning before school, not talking to anyone… It’s a leader who’ll simply walk up and ask how she’s doing. There’ve been lots of scary things happening in schools since you entered pre-school and kindergarten. . . Sometimes it gets scary to think about.. My advice: Forget about that stuff. You’re going to be okay. You’ve got a job to do…so do it. 2015 9:15 music 9:30-10:30 me Sessions: 10:45-11:15 11:20-11:50 12:30-1:00
