Doxology…Great is the Lord

Seating order.. A’ville Lutheran visit. Memories. Talk about memories tonight.. This has been a hot season for memories in Perry. Is this town wet or dry? I enjoyed Calvin Dale’s story of the wooden leg..true or not.

Looking around tonight… so many memories.

Practically every gospel song I know I learned somewhere in Perry… at the Presbyterian church, this church, Fishhook churches. This one: Roger Smith’s living room. Just a Closer Walk with Thee

Lots of confusion for a young boy growing up in Perry. I mean, the Presbyterians were normal so I had to judge everything against them. The Methodists had lots and lots of meals at their church and they’d put funny words into the Lord’s prayer. Church of Christ… no piano. …and this made them good singers. The Catholics always had to leave town to worship. And the folks out at Fishhook got really loud at times. Learned this one from Harold Gerard… in the old hallway outside the bandroom in the basement of Perry High School. He was supposed to be teaching the cheerleaders a song, but he took a break and played this. What a Friend

Bob Chenoweth .. Arenzville tavern….even before J’ville..Train traffic. Germans. J.B. Turner. Arenzville ordinance…doors open on Sunday. Speaking of Perry and alcohol sales…Amy McPherson… told the same story when asked about Prohibition in America. Said, “In America our laws often don’t live up to our values.” Robert Lowery, 1864. Sung by Japanese school children with different lyrics.. about a mythical creature called a Tanuki. Shall We Gather at the River

Some of the best memories of Perry churches came from Fairmount when Grandma and Grandpa Orr would take us out there. For years I thought John Mart was God. He opened the building, made the announcements, started everything and rang the bell to tell us when it was over. Fairmount Sunday School Conventions… Mansion Over the Hilltop

It’s hard to think of hymns without thinking of the people you associate with them. Here are a couple that I can’t think about with my Grandma Orr’s face coming to mind. In the Garden. Jesus Loves Me. Time out: not a gospel song. Learned this one from Lyndle Waters on trail rides. He only knew a few of the words but he’d whistle the rest. Redwing

We learn from our memories.. I’m playing the piano tonight because of sitting in those pews watching Carolyn Elledge, Mildred Smith, Mary Lou Lipcaman, Barb Thiele, Charlotte Dunham, Wilma Waters, John Shepherd, Freida Bradbury.

Preacher said: Read the parts that aren’t underlined or highlighted. For me, that was a great deal of the Old Testament and the ends of Paul’s letters. He often included a long list of people to remember. I Corinthians If Timothy shows up, take good care of him. Make him feel completely at home among you. . Tell him I'm expecting him, and any friends he has with him. About our friend Apollos, I've done my best to get him to pay you a visit, but haven't talked him into it yet. He doesn't think this is the right time. But there will be a "right time."  15-16Would you do me a favor, friends, and give special recognition to the family of Stephanas? You know, they were among the first converts in Greece, and they've put themselves out, serving Christians ever since then.  17-18I want you to know how delighted I am to have Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus here with me.      Aquila, Priscilla, and the church that meets in their house say hello.

Ephesians: Tychicus, my good friend here, will tell you what I'm doing and how things are going with me. He is certainly a dependable servant of the Master! I've sent him not only to tell you about us but to cheer you on in your faith. II Timothy: Get here as fast as you can. Demas, chasing fads, went off to Thessalonica and left me here. . Luke is the only one here with me. Bring Mark with you; he'll be my right-hand man since I'm sending Tychicus to Ephesus. Bring the winter coat I left in Troas with Carpus; also the books and parchment notebooks. Watch out for Alexander the coppersmith. Fiercely opposed to our Message, he caused no end of trouble. God will give him what he's got coming.     Say hello to Priscilla and Aquila; also, the family of Onesiphorus.   Try hard to get here before winter.    Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia, and all your friends here send greetings. Philemon Epaphras, the fellow who was in prison with me in the cause of Christ, says hello. Also my coworkers Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke. All the best to you from the Master, Jesus Christ!

He kept asking others to remember those who serve Christ. He kept asking others to remember.

This year I retired after 35 years of teaching. Pregnant teacher.. Friday. I’ve got to remember the specifics of taking role, etc. Taking a group to Ireland next year.. I’ve been there before, but I’ve got to go over a few memories to get ready. Let’s do the same with Lent this year. Begin with memories of what’s brought us May your Lenton Season be filled with precious memories of your experiences with the Lord. John Wright, 1925…but: record of it in 1877, maybe his memory wasn’t so precious after all. Precious Memories
