Improv games workshop, 2011

Sometimes I’m amazed… National Convention of teachers of the Deaf…wanted to know how to use Improv exercises in their classroom. State math conference…..

But so many speech coaches don’t use them.

Can literally enrich an entire curriculum… A child begins to learn when he or she takes part in school…not just attends school or does the assignments…but actually takes part ownership in his or her own education. Improv can help do this…. NO CHILD need be left behind in Improv

Former student…Teach for America…Clarksdale, MS. .. 3rd grade social studies….kids couldn’t read. Curriculum insisted he teach them social studies..he insisted he teach them reading.

Mark Twain…Fiji Islanders…naked congregation.

The point: Improv is a great way to get kids’ heads into the game. …get them out of that “numb” state. Make them forget that they’re missing text messages while they’re in English class.

But as it pertains to IESA speech, the best way to get your team warmed up…whether for individual events or Impromtu Duet. WORST IDEA: Explain the rules of IDA to your kids then start rehearsing… After they’ve learned some of these Improv games, the IESA event simply becomes another game. The handout…many more than we can get through today…just a taste of some and a few new ones for your old timers who’ve heard me preach before.
