Ken - IESA Idea-4

Maybe we can design a session to exhibit and promote our materials without flaunting the fact …

A couple of ideas:

I. “Choosing the Right Script.” A. For Contest.

  1. We could divide scripts that are appropriate for IESA age level into two groups – Beginners and Advanced and list the scripts in each.
  2. Another idea is to suggest by cast. I frequently get questions like, “What can I use for 4 girls?” “… two beginner boys.” We could offer some suggestions. I might even toy with the idea of doing the catalogue with cast size for the group scripts.

B. For a Public Program. Doing a program at PTA or civic clubs is a good way to promote the speech program and school. What scripts are best suited for the public? (Small cast, comedy, no props, fits any space, etc.)

It would be neat if we could make some videos of actors doing excerpts from the scripts. We select segments that illustrate our point, then video tape the actors. It could be done over a period of weeks or months. At IESA we wouldn’t need to transport students or get audience volunteers or do it ourselves.

II. “Ingredients for a Successful Performance.” Timing, Movement, Characterization, Blocking … and use script examples.

III. We could prepare a list of “Consortium Most Popular” as a handout.

IV. “Before and After” – Use script segments and have them done in a pedestrian fashion, then spice them up with good directing and interpretation.

V. I’m hesitant about a session on new scripts. We may not have many new scripts, they may be mostly in one category such as duets, and new scripts are more important to veteran coaches who have used our material for years. Many of the attendees are looking for general help picking scripts and don’t care if they are new offerings.
