Sangamon County Jr High Schoolmasters, Leadership Conf

One of the greatest fears that most people have….Public Speaking. I’ll tell you a secret…you aren’t born that way. Adults have it worse than Middle School students. Babies aren’t afraid to speak in front of others. We learn to be afraid.

Why are many people afraid of getting up in front of others and speaking? When you take a math test, you don’t show much of your personality. When you take a quiz in social studies, the results are private… You know how you did and your teacher knows. But when you get up in front of people to speak, you open yourself up to the world.

Right now many of you have decided what you think of me by one thing…How I speak. As soon as you speak, I’ll make the same judgment about you. It might be a wrong judgment, but we’re human and we’ll make it anyway.

What we don’t realize…other people are a lot like us… Who….. Take one large step into bed…? Cover everything but mouth….? Ever thinks about what it would be like to be invisible? Has met someone new today that they think is pretty cool?

In this session I’m not going to get you up here and teach you how give a good speech…I’ll just show you that you can.

Koosh ball. Somebody who you met today who you think is pretty cool? What were you most afraid of when you were young? Your favorite Christmas or birthday present ever? Something your Mom or Dad does that embarrasses you? Something you wish more people knew about you?

END: Look what has happened in this session. The ones who shared the most are the ones you now know better. ..and look how it made you feel sort of good to share some of yourself with us. That’s what public speaking is… And you gave us one of the greatest gifts you could give another person….a part of yourself.
