Scouts Day

A little music lesson.. Mildred’s pinky Jimmy Hazilrigg’s trumpet…

You’re going to do more than learn about an occupation today. If you watch closely, you’re going to learn something about some men and women.

I did my student teaching at JHS… sadly learned very little.. teacher got so fed up with me.. “Why don’t you go observe some other classes?” I did…Roger McClintock, etc. The best education I ever got.

Today you’re going to get a chance to do that. Be polite..pay attention to the jobs they’re doing, but that’s not what’s important.. watch the people.

Bill Gates, in a recent interview about who he hires at Microsoft said, “What you know about computers impresses me less and less. I have computers who can tell me everything I need to know about computers. What makes you valuable to me is what you know about people.”

Watch people today… Notice people’s faces when they see them. Watch how they react to each other. Watch the joy they find in serving others.

Watch their reaction when something goes wrong. You’ve already changed their routine somewhat by being with them today. Watch how they react. Matt…baritone.

Quick test… one of the best known men in America..President Bush. Last week he made three major proposals to Congress.. What were they? What’s his attitude when he gives a speech? You know that? How does he react when he’s asked a tough question? You probably know that? Do you think he’s a nice guy? You probably know that.

The man who held the office before him probably made more positive changes than any President in the last 50 years… but how will you remember him? You’ll remember who he was rather than how he did his job.

Our Mayor recently had a reception at the Holiday Inn. He’s running unopposed and still ______ people turned out to honor him. That is ridiculous! No need to raise funds or start a campaign. But still, ___ people showed up at the reception. For what he’s done?… somewhat, but mainly for who he is. Mayor Tendick is a great example of the type of person you’ll be watching today. I have a feeling that when he took the job he didn’t know squat about being a mayor. But he knew about people..he cared about people. And he hasn’t changed.

You’re going to get a chance to be around some people today who do more than their job, they care about people. Whether you learn to be a mayor or public parks director or insurance salesman matters very little today. Watch them… see how they act. That’s where you’ll learn.

Dad: spanked: 10cent vs. 15cent coke. Fire: $500 Did I learn about Coke? About fire? Nope.. about people.. and about what’s really important in life.

Hope you have a great day out there. I know many of the people you’ll be observing. They’re worth watching. PAGE 1
