The IESA Speech Advisory Committee, in its meeting of January 9, 2006, makes the following recommendations to the IESA Board of Directors for its January 20, 2006 meeting:
To make the following additions to the By-laws: All areas will be required to have a host rotation in place. Note: The rotation will be mandatory beginning with the 2006-07 school year. Rationale: Each school will be able to anticipate and plan for their turn to host contest. By establishing a host rotation, each school will actively participate in the process and be a part of the IESA contest experience. A host rotation will not burden larger schools with the responsibility every year. Nicole…I’d advise the words “the same schools,” instead of “the larger schools.” In many cases, they are not the larger schools.
To add a new event under the category of Individual Events. Solo Acting: A dramatic presentation by an individual student. This may be a monologue, a selection in which two or more characters are portrayed, or storytelling. Rationale: The title of solo acting now encompasses several of the existing individual events. These events were very similar in detail, judging, and limits. By combining these elements, students have more flexibility without jeopardizing their ratings.
Topics discussed included: Eligibility requirements, judge instructions and mailings, host instructions, mailing notification, multi-tiered contests, Spotlight on the Arts, financial reports, and a review of the contest season.
