Two New Events:

Read rules… both categories of OS> Original Script.. Many are doing this now and when they do, the judge is left in a quandary.. How do we judge it? Do we judge the material? Do we judge it on even terms with professionally-written scripts? As a result, the IESA has designed a category which will allow judges to speak specifically to the writing and to put the script on a more fair basis with other student-written material. We also hope this will encourage more student-generated material. And excellent source: Improv Duet scenes which show promise in rehearsal. May be either solo or duet… If a duet, one or both of the performers must be the author of the script.

Things to encourage students to do: speak extemporaneously.. from notes.. don’t write out full sentences. Use their own natural speaking abilities.. don’t so overload them with rules that they freeze up. Don’t worry about writing their speech in order when they’re planning. The beginning and ending may come last. Work for a clever opening and a strong closing.. Encourage the “bookend” technique.

These won’t take off like IDA did… but that’s Okay.. it’s for a more select group of students. It’s something we’ve lacked in the program… writing and public speaking skills. IS is perhaps the most practical of all IESA events.
